Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



The ball joints are integral with the control arm. If the ball joint is defective, the entire control arm must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support.

  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper support bracket bolts, then position the caliper and support bracket aside.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front anti-lock brake sensor (ABS) wire from the vehicle frame.
  10.  
  11. Using a suitable jack, support the front suspension lower arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tie-rod end castellated nut. Remove and discard the cotter pin and the castellated nut.
    WARNING
    Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. Do not damage the tie-rod boot when installing the special tool.

  15. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod end from the front wheel knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower ball joint castellated nut. Remove and discard the cotter pin and the castellated nut.
  18.  
  19. Separate the front wheel knuckle from the front suspension lower arm. Then, loosely install the lower ball joint castellated nut.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pinch bolt and nut.
  22.  
  23. Remove the hand-tightened lower ball joint castellated nut, and then remove the front wheel knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the snapring from the ball joint. Discard the snapring.
  26.  
  27. Using a suitable ball joint remover tool, remove the ball joint.
  28.  

To install:


WARNING
Do not damage the ball joint boot when installing the special tool.


NOTE
Clean and inspect the control arm ball joint bore for damage before installing a new ball joint.


NOTE
Make sure the new ball joint snapring is fully seated.

  1. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure. Always install new castellated nuts and cotter pins. Observe the following torques:

    Pinch bolt and nut: 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Lower ball stud nut: 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm)
     
    Tie rod stud nut: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Caliper support bracket bolts: 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm)
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. On 2WD vehicles, remove the front spindle. On 4WD vehicles remove the front knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove and discard the lower ball joint snapring.
  10.  
  11. Using a ball joint removal too, remove the ball joint from its mounting.
  12.  

To install:


WARNING
Do not damage the ball joint boot when installing the special tool.


NOTE
Clean and inspect the control arm ball joint bore for damage before installing a new ball joint.


NOTE
Make sure the new ball joint snapring is fully seated.

  1. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure. Always use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  2.  
  3. Check and adjust the front end, as required.
