Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are not serviced separately. If the bushings require service, the front suspension upper control arm will have to be replaced.

The control arm bushings are not serviceable. If they require service, the arm must be replaced.

Removal & Installation




NOTE
The control arm bushings are not serviceable. If they require service, the upper or lower arm must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link hardware
     

  4.  
  5. Using a spring compressor tool, compress the coil spring.

    Lower ball joint from the spindle
     
    Lower control arm bolts
     
    Lower control arm and coil spring
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The end of the coil spring must cover the first hole and should not be visible in the second hole.


    NOTE
    On the RH front suspension lower arm, install the rear bolt adjustment cam, and nut in the center of the frame slot.


    CAUTION
    Always install the cotter pin into the lower ball joint castellated nut from outboard to inboard, with the fingers bent together at a right angle. Failure to do so will result in damage to the wheel and tire assembly.



    Coil spring to the lower control arm
     



    Lower arm and front coil spring
     
    The two front suspension lower arm bolts and nuts. Do not tighten the nuts.
     



    Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 113 ft. lbs. (153Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the Coil Spring Compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front stabilizer bar link nut. Torque the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (29Nm).
     
    Shock absorber and the two lower nuts
     
    Upper shock absorber bushing and nut/washer assembly
     
    Brake disc shield
     
    Wheel and tire assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Inspect and adjust the front end alignment.
  8.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link hardware
     

  6.  
  7. Using a spring compressor tool, compress the coil spring.

    Lower ball joint from the spindle
     
    Lower control arm bolts
     
    Lower control arm and coil spring
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE

    The two front suspension lower arm bolts and nuts. Do not tighten the nuts at this time.
     



    Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 113 ft. lbs. (153 Nm).

  3. Remove the Coil Spring Compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front stabilizer bar link nut. Torque the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber and the two lower nuts
     
    Upper shock absorber bushing and nut/washer assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand. Torque the bolts to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).

    Brake disc shield
     
    Wheel and tire assembly
     

  8.  
  9. Inspect and adjust the front end alignment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coil spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm retaining bolts. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Torque the left side lower control arm rearward bolt to 148 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Torque the right side lower control arm rearward bolt to 129 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Torque the lower control arm forward bolts to 148 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
  12.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer link nut, washer and bushing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front shock absorber-to-front suspension lower arm nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the torsion bar
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower ball joint castellated nut.
    NOTE
    Do not use a hammer to separate the ball joint from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. Do not damage the ball joint boot while installing the special tool.

  15. Using the special tool, separate the front suspension lower arm from the front wheel knuckle/spindle.
