Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are not serviced separately. If the bushings require service, the front suspension upper control arm will have to be replaced.

The control arm bushings are not serviceable. If they require service, arm must be replaced.

Removal & Installation




NOTE
The control arm bushings are not serviceable. If they require service, the upper or lower arm must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel and tire assembly
     
    Brake disc shield
     

  4.  
  5. Use a jack to support the front suspension lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Mark the position of the front suspension upper arm adjustment cams.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper ball joint retaining nut and pinch bolt.
  10.  
  11. Separate the ball joint from the front wheel spindle (3105).
  12.  
  13. Remove the front suspension upper arm.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Align the marks made during removal on the front suspension upper arm adjustment cam. The forward front suspension upper arm nut must be tightened first while the arm is held at the curb position ride height. Observe the following torques:

    Control arm attaching nuts: 98 ft. lbs. (133Nm)
     
    Pinch bolt: 46 ft. lbs. (63Nm)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable jack, support the lower control arm assembly.
    NOTE
    To avoid possible damage to the wheel spindle (2WD) or knuckle (4WD) secure the assembly to keep it from tilting before removing the pinch bolt and nut.

  9. Remove and discard the upper ball joint nut and pinch bolt. Separate the ball joint from the wheel spindle (2WD) or the knuckle (4WD).
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the two upper control arm nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to use new nuts and bolts, as required.
  2.  
  3. The upper control arm retaining nuts must be fully tightened at curb height. Torque them to 98 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Make sure that the shims are installed in their original locations.
  6.  
  7. Torque the upper ball joint nut and pinch bolt to 46 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
  10.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel and tire assembly
     
    Brake disc shield
     

  6.  
  7. Use a jack to support the front suspension lower arm.
  8.  
  9. Mark the position of the front suspension upper arm adjustment cams.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper ball joint retaining nut and pinch bolt.
  12.  
  13. Separate the ball joint from the front wheel spindle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front suspension upper arm.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Align the marks made during removal on the front suspension upper arm adjustment cam. The forward front suspension upper arm nut must be tightened first while the arm is held at the curb position ride height. Observe the following torques:

    Control arm attaching nuts: 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm)
     
    Pinch bolt: 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm)

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  8.  
  9. Use a suitable jack stand to support the front suspension lower arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pinch bolt.
    WARNING
    Before separating the front suspension upper arm from the front wheel knuckle, secure the front wheel knuckle to prevent it from tilting outward. Failure to do so can cause damage to the front axle shaft.

  13. Separate the front suspension upper arm from the front wheel knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front suspension upper arm:
    1. Remove the two nuts and alignment plates.
    2.  
    3. Remove the two bolts and the cams.
    4.  
    5. Remove the front suspension upper arm.
    6.

To install:


NOTE
When installing the front suspension upper arm, replace the alignment plates with new alignment cams.

  1. Install the front suspension upper arm.
    1. Position the front suspension arm bushing joint.
    2.  
    3. Install the two bolts, four cams and two nuts. Torque to 83-112 ft. lbs. (113-153 Nm).
    4.

  3. Install the pinch bolt and nut.
    1. Position the upper arm into the front wheel knuckle.
    2.  
    3. Install the pinch bolt and nut. Torque to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
    4.

  5. Remove the jack stand from under the front suspension lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Check the wheel alignment.
  12.
