  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.

  1. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums.
  2.  
  3. Drain the rear axle lubricant.
  4.  
  5. For all axles except 3.73:1 and 4.10:1 ratio:
    1. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt and differential pinion shaft.The pinion gears may be left in place. Once the axle shafts are removed, reinstall the pinion shaft and lock bolt.
    2.  
    3. Push the flanged end of the axle shafts toward the center of the vehicle and remove the C-lockwasher from the end of the axle shaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the axle shafts from the housing. If the seals and/or bearing are not being replaced, be careful not to damage the seals with the axle shaft splines upon removal.
    6.

  7. For 3.73:1 and 4.10:1 ratio axles:
    1. Remove the pinion shaft lock bolt. Place a hand behind the differential case and push out the pinion shaft until the step contacts the ring gear.
    2.  
    3. Remove the C-lockwasher from the axle shafts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the axle shafts from the housing. If the seals and/or bearing are not being replaced, be careful not to damage the seals with the axle shaft splines upon removal.

  9. Insert the wheel bearing and seal remover, T85L-1225-AH or equivalent, and a slide hammer into the axle bore and position it behind the bearing so the tanks on the tool engage the bearing outer race. Remove the bearing and seal as a unit.

To install:

  1. If removed, lubricate the new bearing with rear axle lubricant and install the bearing into the housing bore. Use axle tube bearing replacer, T78P-1225-A or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Apply Multi-Purpose Long-Life Lubricant, or equivalent, between the lips of the axle shaft seal.
  4.

  1. Install a new axle shaft seal using axle tube seal replacer T78P-1177-A or equivalent.
  2.  

To permit axle shaft installation on 3.73:1 and 4.10:1 ratio axles, make sure the differential pinion shaft contacts the ring gear before performing Step 11.

  1. Carefully slide the axle shaft into the axle housing, making sure not to damage the oil seal. Start the splines into the side gear and push firmly until the button end of the axle shaft can be seen in the differential case.
  2.  
  3. Install the C-lockwasher on the end of the axle shaft splines, then pull the shaft outboard until the shaft splines engage the C-lockwasher seats in the counterbore of the differential side gear.
  4.  
  5. Position the differential pinion shaft through the case and pinion gears, aligning the hole in the shaft with the lock screw hole. Install the lock bolt and tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (21-29Nm).
  6.  
  7. Clean the gasket mounting surface on the rear axle housing and cover. Apply a continuous bead of Silicone Rubber Sealant ESE-M4G195-A or equivalent to the carrier casting face.
  8.  
  9. Install the cover and tighten the retaining bolts to 25-35 ft. lbs. (20-34 Nm).
  10.  

The cover assembly must be installed within 15 minutes of application of the silicone sealant.

  1. Add lubricant until it is 1 / 4 in. (6mm) below the bottom of the filler hole in the running position. Install the filler plug and tighten to 15-30 ft. lbs. (20-41Nm).
  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the axle housing fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Axle housing cover
     
    Bearing retainer nuts
     
    Axle shaft and bearing
     
    Axle shaft inner oil seal
     

  6.  
  7. If equipped with ABS, grind a flat spot on the wheel speed sensor tone ring, then split the ring with a chisel.
  8.  
  9. Press the wheel bearing off the axle shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bearing retainer and the outer oil seal.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Outer oil seal to the bearing retainer
     
    Bearing retainer to the axle shaft
     
    Bearing and retainer ring pressed onto the axle shaft
     
    Wheel speed sensor tone ring pressed onto the axle shaft, if equipped
     
    Axle shaft inner oil seal
     
    Axle shaft and bearing
     
    Bearing retainer nuts. Tighten them to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the rear differential to the correct level.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    On some vehicles, when the battery cable is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven to relearn its strategy.

  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Drain the axle housing fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Axle housing cover
     
    Bearing retainer nuts
     
    Axle shaft and bearing
     
    Axle shaft inner oil seal
     

  10.  
  11. If equipped with ABS, grind a flat spot on the wheel speed sensor tone ring, then split the ring with a chisel.
  12.  
  13. Press the wheel bearing off the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bearing retainer and the outer oil seal.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Outer oil seal to the bearing retainer
     
    Bearing retainer to the axle shaft
     
    Bearing and retainer ring pressed onto the axle shaft
     
    Wheel speed sensor tone ring pressed onto the axle shaft, if equipped
     
    Axle shaft inner oil seal
     
    Axle shaft and bearing
     
    Bearing retainer nuts. Tighten them to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the rear differential to the correct level.
  4.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 10 differential housing cover bolts and drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the differential housing cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear brake drums.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
    NOTE
    The bolt will not be able to be removed at this time.

  14.  
  15. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves.

  16.  
  17. Push the axle shafts inboard.
  18.  
  19. Remove the U-washers.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.

  20.  
  21. Remove the two axle shafts.
    NOTE
    If only a new seal needs to be installed, use care to avoid damaging the seal bore.

  22.  
  23. Using a suitable seal remover, remove the axle shaft oil seal. Discard the oil seal.
  24.  
  25. Inspect the rear wheel bearing and axle shaft for wear or damage.
  26.  
  27. If necessary, using a slidehammer, remove the rear wheel bearing.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new rear wheel bearing with lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Using a driver, install the rear wheel bearing.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the lip of the new wheel bearing oil seal with grease.
  6.  
  7. Using a driver, install the wheel bearing oil seal.
    NOTE
    Make sure the machined surfaces on both the rear axle housing and the differential housing cover are clean and free of oil before installing the new silicone sealant. The inside of the rear axle must be covered when cleaning the machined surface to prevent contamination.

  8.  
  9. Clean the gasket mating surface of the rear axle and the differential housing cover.
  10.  
  11. Lubricate the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal with grease.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.

  12.  
  13. Install the axle shafts.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves.

  14.  
  15. Position the two U-washers on the button end of the axle shafts.
  16.  
  17. Pull the axle shafts outward.
    NOTE
    If a new pinion shaft lock bolt is unavailable, coat the threads with threadlock and sealer prior to installation.

  18.  
  19. Install the differential pinion shaft.
    1. Align the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the case lock bolt hole.
    2.  
    3. Install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt. Torque to 20 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
    4.

  21. Install the rear brake drums.
  22.  
  23. Apply a new continuous bead of sealant of the specified thickness to the differential housing cover.
    NOTE
    The differential housing cover must be installed within 15 minutes of application of the silicone, or new sealant must be applied. If possible, allow one hour before filling with lubricant to make sure the silicone sealant has correctly cured.

  24.  
  25. Install the different housing cover.
  26.  
  27. Install the 10 differential housing cover bolts. Torque to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Fill the rear axle housing with the proper grade and type lubricant.
  30.  
  31. Install the wheels and tires.
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.  

Ford 8.8 Inch Ring Gear
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Remove the differential housing cover and drain the lubricant.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
    NOTE
    The bolt will not be able to be removed at this time.

  12.  
  13. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove.

  14.  
  15. Push the axle shaft inboard.
  16.  
  17. Remove the U-washer.
  18.  
  19. Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.
  20.  
  21. Remove the axle shaft.
    NOTE
    If only a new seal needs to be installed, use care to avoid damaging the seal bore. If the wheel bearing oil seal is leaking, the differential housing vent may be plugged with foreign material.

  22.  
  23. Using a suitable seal remover, remove the axle shaft oil seal. Discard the oil seal.
  24.  
  25. Inspect the rear wheel bearing and axle shaft for wear or damage.
  26.  
  27. Using the special tools, remove the rear wheel bearing.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new rear wheel bearing with rear axle lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Using the special tools, install the rear wheel bearing.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the lip of the new wheel bearing oil seal with grease.
  6.  
  7. Using the special tools, install the wheel bearing oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Install the axle shaft.
  10.  
  11. Lubricate the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal with grease.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.

  12.  
  13. Install the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Do not damage the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove.
  16.  
  17. Position the U-washer on the button end of the axle shaft.
  18.  
  19. Pull the axle shaft outward.
    NOTE
    If a new bolt is unavailable, coat the bolt threads with threadlock prior to installation.

  20.  
  21. Align the bolt hole in the differential pinion shaft with the bolt hole in the case.
  22.  
  23. Install the new bolt. Torque to 22 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the brake drum.
  26.  
  27. Install the differential housing cover and fill the differential housing with the specified lubricant.
  28.  
  29. Install the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.
