CAUTION
Whenever working on a vehicle equipped with an air bag, always refer to Section 6 for disarming procedures. Follow the procedures outlined or severe injury, or even death may occur.

The manufacturer recommends installing the steering wheel using a new wheel-to-shaft retaining bolt. Before beginning this procedure, obtain a new bolt.

  1. Follow the procedures in Section 6 and disarm the air bag.
  2.

  1. Pry out the two plugs covering the drivers side air bag module screws on the sides of the steering wheel.
  2.
  3. Remove the two air bag module retaining screws and carefully lift the module away from the steering wheel.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the air bag electrical harness plug at the sliding contact. Also unplug the horn and, if equipped, cruise control wire harness connectors.
  6.

CAUTION
Always carry the air bag with the horn pad facing away from your body.

  1. Remove the air bag module and set it on a clean, dry and stable bench with the horn pad facing upwards.
  2.

CAUTION
Tilt columns have a compression spring under the steering wheel that can unexpectantly "pop up" the steering wheel if the bolt is removed completely.

  1. Loosen but do not remove the steering wheel retaining bolt approximately 2 to 3 turns.
  2.
  3. Using the proper steering wheel removal tool, loosen the steering wheel on the steering column.
  4.

WARNING
Do not hammer on the steering wheel or the steering shaft or use a knock off type steering wheel puller as damage to the steering column will occur.

  1. Remove the tool and the steering wheel retaining bolt. Discard the steering wheel retaining bolt.
  2.

WARNING
Ensure that the air bag sliding contact wire harness does not get caught on the steering wheel assembly when lifting the wheel from the shaft.

  1. Remove the steering wheel while routing the wire harness through the wheel opening.
  2.

To install:

  1. Ensure that the vehicle's front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  2.
  3. Route the air bag sliding contact wire harnesses through the steering wheel opening (at the 3 o'clock position).
  4.
  5. Align the steering wheel and shaft and press the wheel onto the shaft. Ensure that the sliding contact wire harness does not get pinched by the wheel.
  6.
  7. Install the new lock bolt and tighten to 25-34 ft. lbs. (34-46 Nm).
  8.
  9. Position the air bag module and connect all of the wire harness plugs to it.
  10.
  11. Carefully install the module to the wheel and loosely install the side retaining bolts.
  12.
  13. Hold the module in position while tightening the retaining bolts to 67-92 inch lbs. (7.6-10.4 Nm).
  14.
  15. Install the two cover plugs by snapping them into the holes on the side of the steering wheel.
  16.
  17. Arm the air bag system by following the procedures in Section 6.
  18.

WARNING
Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING
Carry a live side air bag module with the air bag and tear seam pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING
After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterward.

WARNING
Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.

WARNING
Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for correct system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is involved in a collision, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. Install and correctly position a new sensor or any other damaged supplemental restraint system (SRS) components whether or not the air bag is deployed.

WARNING
To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or installing a new front or side supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before repairing, installing new, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches. Refer to the appropriate manual to determine the location of the front air bag sensors. The side air bag sensors are located at or near the base of the B-pillar. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

WARNING
The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

NOTE
Restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed under the seats in the side air bag to floor connector.

NOTE
Diagnostics or repairs are not to be carried out on a side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side air bag system or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tool must be installed in side air bag connector at the floor connector. The restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed prior to operating the vehicle.

NOTE
After diagnosing/repairing a seat system the restraint system diagnostic simulator must be removed before operating the vehicle.

NOTE
A repair is made by installing a new component only. If a new part is installed and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.

NOTE
If a side air bag deployment took place a new seatback pad, trim cover, and side air bag module must be installed. A new seatback frame should be installed if necessary.
