Removal & Installation

If the replacement thermostat is equipped with a "jiggle pin", the pin must be install facing upwards toward the top of the engine (12 o'clock), and should be on the side facing the water outlet. When installing the thermostat gasket, the seal print side should face the cylinder head.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. For 2.3L engines, remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the heater hose and position out of the way.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three bolts and separate the water outlet adapter from the thermostat housing.
    NOTE
    The thermostat is indexed and must be installed correctly.

  15. Remove the thermostat and the O-ring seal.
    NOTE
    Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.

  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque all fasteners to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  19. Check for leaks.
