  1. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  4.  
  5. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery
     
    Air cleaner assembly and fresh air duct
     
    Wheels
     
    Splash shields
     
    Selector cable clip
     
    Selector cable from the manual shaft lever, pull out the cable from the bracket and remove the cable
     
    Transaxle range switch connector
     
    Solenoid valve connector
     
    Oxygen (02S) connector
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Input/Turbine speed shaft connector
     
    Starter harness
     
    Engine mount stay
     
    Fuel filter bolts
     
    Oil hose and breather hose
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Tie rod ends from the knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Transverse member
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Joint shaft, install tool 49 G030 455 to hold the side gears after removal
     
    Number 5 mount rubber
     
    Number 1 engine mount nut, rubber and bracket

  11. Support the engine assembly with a engine support assembly such as 49 E017 5A0.

    Engine mount member
     
    Number 2 engine mount
     
    Under cover
     
    Torque converter nuts
     
    Number 4 engine mount
     

  12.  
  13. Loosen the engine support assembly and lean the engine towards the transaxle.
  14.  
  15. Support the transaxle with a jack, remove the transaxle bolts and the transaxle.

To install:

  1. Place the transaxle onto a jack and raise into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle bolts and tighten the bolts to 50-73 ft. lbs. (68-99 Nm).

    Hand tighten the number 4 mount retainers, then tighten to 55-77 ft. lbs. (75-104 Nm)

  5. Lean the engine towards its normal position and tighten the support assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter nuts
     
    Under cover
     
    Number 2 engine mount
     

  8.  
  9. Install the engine mount member as follows while referring to the illustration for bolt locations:
    1. Position the direction indicator on the mount member bushings facing towards the front side and install the bushings onto the mount.
    2.  
    3. Put the number 2 engine mount stud bolts through the mount member installation holes. Install mount member boltsAA
    4.  
    5. Loosely tighten the number 2 engine mount nuts
    6.  
    7. Tighten the number 2 engine mount nutsB
    8.

  11. Install or connect the following:

    Number 1 engine mount nut, rubber and bracket. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Number 5 mount rubber. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Joint shaft. Install a new circlip with the opening facing up. Hand tighten the boltsA
     
    Transverse member. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Tie rod ends to the knuckle. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Oil hose and breather hose
     
    Fuel filter bolts
     
    Engine mount stay. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Starter harness
     
    Input/Turbine speed shaft connector
     
    VSS connector
     
    02S connector
     
    Solenoid valve connector
     
    Transaxle range switch connector
     
    Selector cable to the bracket, install the clip and attach the cable to the manual shaft lever
     
    Splash shields
     
    Wheels
     
    Air cleaner assembly and fresh air duct
     
    Battery

  13. Fill the transmission with fluid.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle range switch connector

    Oxygen (0 2 S) connector
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Input/Turbine speed shaft connector
     
    Starter harness
     
    Engine mount stay
     
    Fuel filter bolts
     
    Oil hose and breather hose
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Tie rod ends from the knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Transverse member
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Joint shaft, install tool 49 G030 455 to hold the side gears after removal
     
    Number 5 mount rubber
     
    Number 1 engine mount nut, rubber and bracket

  11. Support the engine assembly with a engine support assembly such as 49 E017 5A0.

    Engine mount member
     
    Number 2 engine mount
     
    Under cover
     
    Torque converter nuts
     
    Number 4 engine mount

  13. Loosen the engine support assembly and lean the engine towards the transaxle.
  14.  
  15. Support the transaxle with a jack, remove the transaxle bolts and the transaxle.

To install:

  1. Place the transaxle onto a jack and raise into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle bolts and tighten the bolts to 50-73 ft. lbs. (68-99 Nm).

  5. Lean the engine towards its normal position and tighten the support assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter nuts
     
    Under cover
     
    Number 2 engine mount

  9. Install the engine mount member as follows while referring to the illustration for bolt locations:
    1. Position the direction indicator on the mount member bushings facing towards the front side and install the bushings onto the mount.
    2.  
    3. Put the number 2 engine mount stud bolts through the mount member installation holes. Install mount member bolts A and nuts A and tighten to 50-68 ft. lbs. (67-93 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Loosely tighten the number 2 engine mount nuts and remove the engine support assembly.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the number 2 engine mount nuts B to 55-77 ft. lbs. (75-104 Nm).

  11. Install or connect the following:

    Number 1 engine mount nut, rubber and bracket. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Number 5 mount rubber. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Joint shaft. Install a new circlip with the opening facing up. Hand tighten the bolts A , then tighten the bolts to 32-45 ft. lbs. (43-61 Nm). Refer to the illustration for bolt location.

    Transverse member. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Tie rod ends to the knuckle. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Oil hose and breather hose
     
    Fuel filter bolts
     
    Engine mount stay. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
     
    Starter harness
     
    Input/Turbine speed shaft connector
     
    VSS connector
     
    0 2 S connector
     
    Solenoid valve connector
     
    Transaxle range switch connector
     
    Selector cable to the bracket, install the clip and attach the cable to the manual shaft lever
     
    Splash shields
     
    Wheels
     
    Air cleaner assembly and fresh air duct
     
    Battery

  13. Fill the transmission with fluid.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transaxle oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery and battery tray
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Starter
     
    Separate the heater pipe
     
    Wheels
     
    Splash shields
     
    Under cover
     
    Steering gear, linkage and pipe assembly bolts from the crossmember and using mechanics wire, position the steering gear and linkage assembly aside.
     
    Terminal No. 1, No. 2, Transmission range switch connectors and the ground harness
     
    Clip
     
    Selector cable
     
    Cable bracket
     
    Transaxle upper mount bolts
     
    Transaxle oil hoses (cooler lines)
     
    Lower control arm ball joints
     
    Damper fork
     
    Tie rod ends from the knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Halfshafts

  9. Disconnect the left halfshaft from the joint shaft by inserting a prybar between the transaxle and the halfshaft outer ring. Disconnect the joint shaft bracket from the block and remove the joint shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install tool 49 G030 455 to hold the side gears after removal

    No. 4 engine mount
     

  12.  
  13. Support the engine assembly with a engine support assembly such as 49 E017 5A0.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Number 1 engine mount bracket
     
    Lower front shock absorber bolt
     
    No. 1 engine mount. Remove the intake manifold and attach tool 49 UN30 3050 to the head as shown and remove the mount.

  17. Support the crossmember with a jack and remove the nuts and the crossmember bracket.

    Endplate cover
     
    Torque converter nuts
     
    Lower transaxle bolts

  19. Loosen the engine support assembly and lean the engine towards the transaxle.
  20.  
  21. Support the transaxle with a jack, remove the transaxle bolts and the transaxle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Place the transaxle onto a jack and raise into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle bolts and tighten the bolts to 28-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm). Refer to the exploded view illustration for bolt locations.
  4.  
  5. Align the holes for the torque converter nuts by rotating the converter and then lock the drive plate by inserting a suitable tool through the starter motor opening. Hand tighten the nuts, then final tighten them to 25-32 ft. lbs. (34-44 Nm) using 2-3 passes.
  6.  
  7. Install the crossmember in the reverse order of removal and refer to the exploded view illustration for component locations and torque specifications. Refer to the exploded view of the crossmember assembly in the engine removal procedure for the Mazda 6 models equipped the 3.0L (AJ) engine earlier in this section.
  8.  
  9. Align the hole of the No. 1 engine mount rubber with the bolt hole of the transaxle. Hand tighten bolt A and then tighten bolts B and C to 49-68 ft. lbs. (66-93 Nm) and then tighten bolt A to 49-68 ft. lbs. (66-93 Nm).

  11. Install the No. 4 engine mount as follows:
    1. Make sure the No. 4 mount is installed as illustrated.
    2.  
    3. Hand tighten bolt D.
    4.  
    5. Raise the transaxle with a floor jack and align the hole on the No. 4 engine mount bracket with the stud bolts on the transaxle.
    6.  
    7. Hand tighten bolt A and nuts B and C.
    8.  
    9. Tighten bolts B, C to 49-68 ft. lbs. (66-93 Nm) and then tighten bolt A to 49-68 ft. lbs. (66-93 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Tighten bolt D to 62-86 ft. lbs. (85-116 Nm).
    12.

  13. Remove the engine support device.

  15. Connect the selector lever to manual shaft lever so the selector cable does not have a load on it and the spring side of the cable end is facing upwards as illustrated. Make sure the end of the manual shaft lever sticks out of the end of the selector cable.

  17. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  18.  
  19. Fill the transaxle with fluid. Road test the vehicle and check for leaks. Top off all fluids as needed.
