Operation



The Knock Sensor (KS) converts the vibration of the cylinder block into a voltage and outputs it. If there is a malfunction of the knock sensor, the voltage output will not change. The PCM checks whether the voltage output changes.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from the engine block.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from the engine block using special tool 49H018001 or equivalent.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor from the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

4-Cyl.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil filter element
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from the engine block using special tool 49H018001 or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Installation new oil filter element.
  12.  

Kj Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake air system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water inlet pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the Lysholm compressor bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the sensor from the engine block using special tool 49H018001 or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Kl Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accelerator cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pipe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the harness.
  14.  
  15. Remove the EGR valve.
  16.  
  17. Remove the intake manifold.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bypass pipe.
  20.  
  21. Remove the water pipe.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the sensor from the engine block using special tool 49H018001 or equivalent.
  26.  
  27. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

V6
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake manifold.

  7. Remove the bypass hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pipe.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the sensor from the engine block using special tool 49H018001 or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Testing



  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the knock sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the knock sensor terminal A and the knock sensor body. Standard value: 560 kohms at approximately 68°F.
  6.  
  7. If within specifications, check connectors and wiring between the sensor and ECM/PCM. If ok, replace ECM/PCM.
  8.  
  9. If not within specifications, replace the knock sensor.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the knock sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the knock sensor terminal A and B. Standard value: 4870 kohms at approximately 68°F.
  6.  
  7. If within specifications, check connectors and wiring between the sensor and ECM/PCM. If ok, replace ECM/PCM.
  8.  
  9. If not within specifications, replace the knock sensor.
  10.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the knock sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the knock sensor terminal A and B. Standard value: 4870 kohms at approximately 68°F.
  6.  
  7. If within specifications, check connectors and wiring between the sensor and ECM/PCM. If ok, replace ECM/PCM.
  8.  
  9. If not within specifications, replace the knock sensor.
  10.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
