  1. Remove the battery cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the meter hood.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control panel screws, slide the unit forward and unplug the connectors.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  

Mazda 3



Automatic Control Panel
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the decoration panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the center panel module.
  8.  
  9. Release the left and right tabs and slide the control panel forward.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws, connector and panel.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  

Manual Control Panel
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray panel.
  4.  
  5. Detach the hood release lever from the lower panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front scuff plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front side trim.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right side front scuff plate.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right side front side trim.
  16.  
  17. Remove the decoration panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the glove compartment.
  20.  
  21. Remove the passenger junction box and bracket. Unplug the junction box wiring harness clamp from the dashboard.
  22.  
  23. Remove the center panel module.
  24.  
  25. Remove the Remove the wire clamp screws from the A/C unit.
  26.  
  27. Remove the air mix wire and airflow mode wire. Pull the wire in off while pressing the link tab. Remove the E-rings from the air mix wire and airflow mode wire, slide the wires outwards, then remove the wire clamps from the air mix wire and airflow mode wire
  28.  
  29. Release the left and right tabs and remove screw, fan switch connector, climate control connector and unit.

  31. Install the wire clamp to the A/C unit.
  32.  
  33. Set the temperature control dial at MAX COLD.
  34.  
  35. Set the airflow mode selector dial at defroster.
  36.  
  37. Install the E-rings to each position on the wires shown in the illustration.

  39. Pass each wire through the following routes and connect to A/C unit.

  41. Connect the climate control unit connectors.

  43. Install the climate control unit.

  45. Adjust the climate control unit air mix wire as follows:
    1. Set the temperature control dial at middle position (MAX HOT-MAX COLD).
      CAUTION
      If the air mix wire is set without first fixing the air mix link position, it is possible that the air mix door cannot be switched normally.

    2.  
    3. Set the air mix sub link by inserting an #5 Phillips screwdriver into the set hole to fix the position of the link.

    5. Connect the air mix wire to air mix link.
    6.  
    7. Install the air mix wire to the wire clamp as illustrated.
    8.  
    9. Remove the screwdriver and verify that the temperature control dial can move its full stroke.
    10.

  47. Adjust the climate control unit air mix wire as follows:
    1. Set the airflow mode selector dial at defroster.
      CAUTION
      If the airflow mode wire is set without first fixing the airflow mode main link position, it is possible that the airflow mode door cannot be switched normally.

    3. Set the airflow mode main link to the vent position and insert a #5 Phillips screwdriver into the set hole to fix the position of the link.
    4.  
    5. Connect the airflow mode wire to airflow mode link.
    6.  
    7. Install the airflow mode wire to the wire clamp as illustrated.

    9. Remove the screwdriver and verify that the airflow mode selector dial can move its full stroke.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the air mix wire from wire clamp and link, if equipped with a manual control panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center panel unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws and climate control unit, if equipped with an automatic control panel.
  8.  
  9. Release the hook and pull the climate control unit toward you, if equipped with a manual control panel.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the climate control unit connectors and remove the climate control unit, if equipped with a manual control panel.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  31. Install the wire clamp to the A/C unit.

    5. Connect the air mix wire to air mix link.
    6.  
    7. Install the air mix wire to the wire clamp as illustrated.
    8.  
    9. Remove the screwdriver and verify that the temperature control dial can move its full stroke.

  47. Adjust the climate control unit air mix wire as follows:
    1. Set the airflow mode selector dial at defroster.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center panel unit.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws and climate control unit.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Miata



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the air intake wire from the blower unit.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the air mix wire and airflow mode wire from the heater unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hole covers by inserting a small, tape-wrapped, flathead screwdriver into the slot, then carefully prying them off without scratching the center panel. Pry up and pull off the hole covers carefully to prevent the posts from breaking off.

  9. With the beveled parts of the control assembly removal tool facing inward, insert them into the climate control unit
  10.  
  11. Pull the control assembly removal tool outward and rearward to slide out the climate control unit.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the climate control unit connectors

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the meter hood.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hazard warning switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control panel screws, slide the unit forward and unplug the connectors.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  

MX-5 Miata



  1. Remove the battery cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the side wall.
  6.  
  7. Remove the center panel unit.
  8.  
  9. Remove the climate control unit from the center panel unit
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the air mix and airflow mode wires from each wire clamp and link.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws and the climate control unit
  8.

  1. Install the climate control unit to the center panel.
  2.  
  3. Pass each wire through the following routes then connect to each unit.
  4.  
  5. Connect the climate control unit connectors.
  6.  
  7. Install the center panel.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the air mix wire as follows:
    1. Set the temperature control dial at MAX COLD.
    2.  
    3. Set the air mix link to MAX COLD in the direction of the arrow and insert a screwdriver into the set hole.
    4.  
    5. Connect the air mix wire to the air mix link.
    6.  
    7. Clamp the air mix wire to wire clamp.
    8.  
    9. Verify that the temperature control dial moves its full stroke.

  11. Adjust the airflow mode wire as follows:
    1. Set the airflow mode control dial at defroster.
    2.  
    3. Set the airflow mode link to defroster in the direction of the arrow and insert a screwdriver into the set hole.
    4.  
    5. Connect the airflow mode wire to the airflow mode link.
    6.  
    7. Clamp the airflow mode wire to wire clamp.
    8.  
    9. Verify that the airflow mode control dial moves its full stroke.

  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
