Adjustment



The belt adjustment is maintained by an auto tensioner. Inspect the tensioner as outlined below.

  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the alternator drive belt auto tensioner moves smoothly in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction.
  4.  
  5. If it does not move smoothly, replace the drive belt auto tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Turn the drive belt auto tensioner pulley by hand and verify that it rotates smoothly.
  8.  
  9. If it does not move smoothly, replace the drive belt auto tensioner.
  10.  

  1. Loosen mounting bolts A, B and nut C.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the belt deflection or tension by turning the adjusting bolt D.
  4.  
  5. Tighten mounting bolts A, B and nut C.

1.6L (Zm) Engine

Refer to the illustration for component location.

  1. Loosen mounting bolts A, B and C.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the belt deflection or tension by turning the adjusting bolt D.
  4.  
  5. Tighten mounting bolts A, B and C.

2.0L (Fs) Engine

Refer to the illustration for component location.

  1. Loosen mounting bolts A and nut B.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the belt deflection or tension by turning the adjusting bolt C.
  4.  
  5. Tighten mounting bolts A and nut B.

  1. Loosen mounting bolt A and B.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the belt deflection or tension by turning the adjusting bolt C.
  4.  
  5. Tighten bolt C.
  6.  
  7. Tighten mounting bolt A and B.

2.3L (Kj) Engine

The belt adjustment is maintained by an auto tensioner. Inspect the tensioner as outlined below.

  1. Remove the drive belt.

  3. Verify that the alternator drive belt auto tensioner moves smoothly in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction.

  5. If it does not move smoothly, replace the drive belt auto tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Turn the drive belt auto tensioner pulley by hand and verify that it rotates smoothly.
  8.  
  9. If it does not move smoothly, replace the drive belt auto tensioner.
  10.  

2.5L (Kl) Engine

Refer to the illustration for component location.

  1. Loosen locknut A.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the belt deflection or tension by turning the adjusting bolt B.
  4.  
  5. Tighten locknut A.

  1. Loosen idler pulley locknut A.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the belt tension using bolt B to 0.22-0.25 inch on a new belt of 0.26-0.29 inch on a used belt.

Inspection



Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
