Oil Pump

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover and belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pickup tube and discard the gasket
     
    Oil pump attaching bolts
     
    Front crankshaft seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0.02-0.04 inch (0.5-1.0mm), into the oil pump with a Seal Installer tool 49 B014 401.
  4.  
  5. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump at the cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings on the oil pump
     
    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm)
     
    Oil pump pickup tube, using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm)
     
    Oil pan
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt and cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.  

Due to space requirements, the engine assembly must be removed in order to replace the oil pump.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any work. The backup power supply system for the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must deplete its stored energy.

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    All electrical connections, hoses and cables necessary to remove the engine assembly
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Engine assembly
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil strainer
     
    Oil pan baffle
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front timing belt pulley and key
     
    Vacuum pump, if equipped
     
    Front seal
     
    Oil pump and discard the O-rings
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Make sure that the oil pump mating surfaces are clean.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings coated with engine oil in the oil pump cavity
     
    New oil seal coated with engine oil to the oil pump
     

  4.  
  5. Apply silicone sealant to the oil pump contact surface.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts, in sequence, to 16-22 ft. lbs. (22-30 Nm) for the -A- bolts and to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm) for all other bolts

    Vacuum pump, if equipped, using a new gasket and O-ring
     
    Key and the timing belt pulley
     
    Timing belt
     
    Oil pan baffle
     
    Oil pump strainer and oil pan
     
    Engine assembly into the vehicle
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    All electrical connectors, cables, hoses and any components necessary to complete the engine installation
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine, bleed the cooling system, make any necessary adjustments.
  14.  
  15. Check for leaks and road test for proper operation.

1.6L (Zm) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt pulley
     
    Oil pan
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Oil pump attaching bolts
     
    Front crankshaft seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0.02-0.04 inch (0.5-1.0mm) into the oil pump with a Seal Installer tool 49 B014 001.
  4.  
  5. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump at the cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings on the oil pump
     
    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    Alternator
     
    Air conditioning compressor bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Oil pan
     
    Timing belt pulley
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.  

1.8L (Bp) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Oil pump bolts and the oil pump
     
    Front crankshaft seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.02 inch (0-0.5mm) into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump body-to-cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    Air conditioning compressor bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.  

1.8L (Fp) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    negative battery cable
     
    crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt pulley
     
    oil pan
     
    a/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Transaxle
     
    Two bolts at the rear of the oil pan upper block, on 1.8L (FP) engines or if equipped with a manual transaxle on 2.0L (FS) engines
     
    Rubber caps at the bottom surface, then remove the two bolts from the upper block through the holes uncovered by removing the caps, if equipped an automatic transaxle, on 2.0L (FS) engines
     
    Oil pan upper block bolts using 2-3 steps in the sequence illustrated
     
    Oil pan upper block using a rubber mallet and a suitable separator tool
     
    oil pump body bolts and the oil pump body
     
    Seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.019 inch (0-0.5mm) into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Apply 0.04-0.07 inch (1-2mm) bead of sealant to the oil pump at the locations illustrated
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    oil pump. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Apply a bead of sealant 0.08-0.11 inch (2-3mm) the mating surface of the upper block as illustrated, place the block assembly into position and tighten the bolts in sequence illustrated to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) using 2-3 steps.

    Two bolts at the rear of the oil pan upper block, on 1.8L (FP) engines or if equipped with a manual transaxle on 2.0L (FS) engines and torque to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and install the caps

  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  14.  

2.0L (Fs) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt pulley
     
    Oil pan
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Transaxle
     
    Two bolts at the rear of the oil pan upper block, on 1.8L (FP) engines or if equipped with a manual transaxle on 2.0L (FS) engines
     
    Rubber caps at the bottom surface, then remove the two bolts from the upper block through the holes uncovered by removing the caps, if equipped an automatic transaxle, on 2.0L (FS) engines
     
    Oil pan upper block bolts using 2-3 steps in the sequence illustrated
     
    Oil pan upper block using a rubber mallet and a suitable separator tool
     
    Oil pump body bolts and the oil pump body
     
    Seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.019 inch (0-0.5mm) into the oil pump.

  5. Apply 0.04-0.07 inch (1-2mm) bead of sealant to the oil pump at the locations illustrated
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    Oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Apply a bead of sealant 0.08-0.11 inch (2-3mm) the mating surface of the upper block as illustrated, place the block assembly into position and tighten the bolts in sequence illustrated to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) using 2-3 steps.

    Two bolts at the rear of the oil pan upper block, on 1.8L (FP) engines or if equipped with a manual transaxle on 2.0L (FS) engines and torque to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and install the caps

2.0L (Lf) & 2.3L (L3) Engines

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil strainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump chain guide, tensioner, spring and chain.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump sprocket using tool 49 G032 354 to stop the pump rotating.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump bolts and the pump.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump and tighten the bolts in two steps in the sequence illustrated. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 71-88 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm) and final tighten to 15.2-18.4 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump sprocket using tool 49 G032 354 to stop the pump rotating. Tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the oil pump exploded view illustration.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump chain, spring, tensioner and guide. Tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the oil pump exploded view illustration.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil strainer. Tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the oil pump exploded view illustration.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

  14.  

2.3L (Kj) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt pulley
     
    Oil pan
     
    Alternator
     
    Power steering pump and bracket, move the pump aside leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    Oil baffle
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket, if necessary
     
    Vacuum pump
     
    Oil pump body bolts and the oil pump body
     
    Seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.02 inch (0-0.7mm) into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Apply a 0.04-0.07 inch (1-2mm) bead of silicone sealant to the contact surface of the pump.
  6.  
  7. Apply clean engine oil to the NEW O-ring and install it in the pump
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the bolts, in sequence, to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm) for the A bolts and to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm) for all other bolts.

  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  14.  

2.5L (Kl) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt pulley
     
    Oil pan
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket, if necessary
     
    Alternator
     
    Oil baffle
     
    Alternator bracket
     
    Oil pump body bolts and the oil pump body
     
    Seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.019 inch (0-0.5mm) into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Apply clean engine oil to the NEW O-ring and install it in the pump
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump bolts in the locations illustrated noting the location and length of the bolts. The long bolts A are 1.6 inch (40mm) long and the short bolts B are 1 inch (25mm) long. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    Oil baffle and torque the bolts in sequence to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm)

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.  

3.0L (Aj) Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing chain.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil strainer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump bolts in the sequence illustrated.

  14.  
  15. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump and tighten the bolts in the proper sequence. Torque the bolts to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the oil strainer. Tighten the strainer bolts to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm) and the oil strainer stay nut to 133 inch lbs. (15 Nm) plus an additional 45 degree turn.
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks; repair if necessary.

4-Cylinder Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    A/C compressor and move it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines attached
     
    A/C compressor mounting bracket
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pickup tube and discard the gasket
     
    Oil pump body bolts and the oil pump body
     
    Front crankshaft seal from the oil pump, if the pump is being replaced
     
    Oil pump cover bolts, cover and rotors, on the 2.0L engine
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly be hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0-0.02 inch (0-0.5mm), into the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. On the 2.0L engine, install or connect the following:

    Oil pump rotors into the pump body with the rotor marks aligned with each other
     
    Oil pump cover. Torque the bolts to 53-78 inch lbs. (6-9 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump body-to-cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings on the oil pump
     
    Oil pump body. Torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm)
     
    Oil pump pickup tube using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil pan
     
    Air conditioning compressor bracket. Torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
     
    Air conditioning compressor. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  14.  

Mazdaspeed6
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil strainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump chain guide, tensioner, spring and chain.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump sprocket using tool 49 G032 354 to stop the pump rotating.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump bolts and the pump.

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump and tighten the bolts in two steps in the sequence illustrated. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 71-105 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm) and final tighten to 12.6-17 ft. lbs. (17-23 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump sprocket using tool 49 G032 354 to stop the pump rotating. Tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the oil pump exploded view illustration.

  5. Install the oil pump chain, spring, tensioner and guide. Tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the oil pump exploded view illustration.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil strainer. Tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the oil pump exploded view illustration.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
