Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



All Mazda-s use a pressed in control arm bushing, and the pressing can be done using two appropriately sized sockets (a press socket and a catch socket) and a large bench vise.

  1. Position the control arm and the 2 sockets into a vise.
  2.  
  3. Position the press socket onto the control arm bushing.
  4.  
  5. Position the catch socket onto the control arm, opposite of the press socket.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bench vise slowly and press the bushing into the catch socket.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply soapy water to the new control arm bushing.
  2.  
  3. Position the bushing against the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Using the same sockets, in the same positions, press the new bushing into the control arm.
  6.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Cotter pin
     
    Upper ball joint nut by loosening it
     
    Ball joint by pressing it from the knuckle
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     
    Lower strut mounting bolt
     
    Upper control arm bolt and nut
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Loosely tighten the bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the lower strut mounting bolt.

    Ball joint to the knuckle. Torque nut to 47-60 ft. lbs. (63-82 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin to ball joint nut
     
    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Torque upper control arm bolt to 87-101 ft. lbs. (118-137 Nm) and the lower strut mounting bolt to 69-86 ft. lbs. (94-116 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ABS sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake hose bracket bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar link nut.
  10.  
  11. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  12.  
  13. Separate the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using a separator tool such as 49 T028 3A0.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper arm rear bolts and the arm.

To install:

  1. Install the upper arm and the bolts.
  2.  
  3. Attach the ball joint to the knuckle. Tighten the ball joint bolt to 29-39 ft. lbs. (39-53 Nm) and the rear upper arm bolts to 36-49 ft. lbs. (49-66 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bar link nut and tighten to 31-40 ft. lbs. (43-54 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the brake hose bracket bolt and tighten to 13-18 ft. lbs. (18-25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the ABS sensor and in the wheel.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Undercover and band for the wheel speed sensor harness
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Cotter pin
     
    Upper ball joint nut by loosening it
     
    Ball joint by pressing it from the knuckle
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     
    Lower strut mounting bolt
     
    Upper control arm bolt and nut
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Loosely tighten the bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the lower strut mounting bolt.

    Ball joint to the knuckle. Torque nut to 31-45 ft. lbs. (42-61 Nm)
     
    New cotter pin to ball joint nut
     
    Band for the wheel speed sensor and undercover
     
    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Torque upper control arm bolt to 87-101 ft. lbs. (118-137 Nm) and the lower strut mounting bolt to 54-69 ft. lbs. (73-93 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coil spring
     
    Upper control arm bolts and nuts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Loosely tighten the bolt and nut.

    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Torque upper control arm nuts and bolts to 55-75 ft. lbs. (75-101 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ABS sensor.
  6.

  10.  
  11. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  12.  
  13. Separate the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using a separator tool such as 49 T028 3A0.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper arm rear bolts and the arm.

To install:



Install the upper arm and the bolts.
 

  1. Attach the ball joint to the knuckle. Tighten the ball joint bolt to 29-39 ft. lbs. (39-53 Nm) and the rear upper arm bolts to 36-49 ft. lbs. (49-66 Nm).

  3. Install the stabilizer bar link nut and tighten to 31-40 ft. lbs. (43-54 Nm).

    Upper control arm bolt and nut
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Loosely tighten the bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the lower strut mounting bolt.

    Ball joint to the knuckle. Torque nut to 47-60 ft. lbs. (63-82 Nm).

  3. Loosely tighten the bolt and nut.

    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Torque upper control arm nuts and bolts to 55-75 ft. lbs. (75-101 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ABS sensor.

To install:

  1. Install the upper arm and the bolts.
