The front and rear wheel bearings are not adjustable. If the bearings become loose or make noise, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, unstake the nut prior to removal
     
    Brake caliper and rotor

    Tie rod end from the knuckle
     
    Control arm ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Knuckle assembly
     
    inner oil seal from the knuckle
     
    Hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 G033 103 and 49 G033 105. If the bearing inner race remains in the hub, grind a section of the bearing inner race until 0.02 inch (0.5mm) remains and use a chisel to remove it.
     
    bearing from the hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 G033 102 and 49 G033 106
     
    brake dust shield, if it is being replaced. Mark the cover and knuckle for replacement purposes and use a chisel to remove the shield.
     

  6.  
  7. Clean and inspect all parts but do not wash or clean the wheel bearing. The bearing must be replaced.

To install:

  1. Using Mazda Press tools 49 G033 107a and 49 F027 009, install a new dust shield cover assembly to the knuckle, if removed.
  2.  
  3. Using press tools 49 G033 797, 49 F027 004 and 49 F027 003; press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    wheel bearing retaining ring
     

  6.  
  7. Using press tools 49 G033 105, 49 F027 009; press in the hub assembly.

    New oil seal using installation tool 49 V001 795
     
    Knuckle assembly, tighten the upper bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) and the lower bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm)
     
    Control arm ball joint to the knuckle
     
    Tie rod end to the knuckle
     
    Brake rotor and caliper
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, tighten the nut to 174-235 ft. lbs. (236-318 Nm) and stake the nut
     
    Wheels

    Wheels
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, Unstake the nut prior to removal
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Tie rod end from the knuckle
     
    Control arm ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Knuckle assembly
     
    inner oil seal from the knuckle
     
    Hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 G030 727, 49 G033 102 and 49 F026 103. If the bearing inner race remains in the hub, grind a section of the bearing inner race until 0.02 inch (0.5mm) remains and use a chisel to remove it.
     
    bearing from the hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 F027 005, 49 F027 003 and 49 F026 103
     
    brake dust shield, if it is being replaced. Mark the cover and knuckle for replacement purposes and use a chisel to remove the shield.
     

  6.  
  7. Clean and inspect all parts but do not wash or clean the wheel bearing. The bearing must be replaced.
  8.

To install:

  1. Using Mazda Press tools 49 E033 101 and 49 F027 009, install a new dust shield cover assembly to the knuckle, if removed.
  2.  
  3. Using press tools 49 F027 003, 49 F027 007 and 49 F027 009; press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    wheel bearing retaining ring
     

  6.  
  7. Using press tool 49 F027 009 press in the hub assembly.

    New oil seal using installation tool 49 V001 795
     
    Knuckle assembly, tighten the upper bolt to 93 ft. lbs. (126 Nm) and the lower bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     
    Control arm ball joint to the knuckle
     
    Tie rod end to the knuckle
     
    Brake rotor and caliper
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, tighten the nut to 174-235 ft. lbs. (236-318 Nm) and stake the nut
     
    Wheels

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

NOTE
The wheel bearings are not serviceable. If the bearings are bad, a new hub/bearing assembly must be installed.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Hub center dust cap
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the staked portion of the hub locknut with a hammer and chisel. Lock the hub by applying the brakes and loosen the nut.

    Brake caliper
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Hub locknut and discard it
     
    Hub from the spindle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub to the spindle
     
    Hub locknut. Torque the nut to 123-159 ft. lbs. (167-215 Nm).
     
    Stake the new nut into the spindle groove using a dull chisel
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Hub center dust cap
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, Unstake the nut prior to removal.
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Tie rod end from the knuckle
     
    Upper leading link ball joint
     
    Upper lateral link ball joint
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Knuckle assembly
     
    Snap ring
     
    Hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 F026 102 and 49 W017 101. If the bearing inner race remains in the hub, grind a section of the bearing inner race until 0.02 inch (0.5mm) remains and use a chisel to remove it.
     
    bearing from the hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 G0797, 49 G026 102, 49 E033 101 and 49 W017 101
     
    brake dust shield, if it is being replaced. Mark the cover and knuckle for replacement purposes and use a chisel to remove the shield.
     

  6.  
  7. Clean and inspect all parts but do not wash or clean the wheel bearing. The bearing must be replaced.

To install:

  1. Using Mazda Press tools 49 G033 107a and 49 G026 103, install a new dust shield cover assembly to the knuckle, if removed.
  2.  
  3. Using press tools 49 G026 103 and 49 F026 102, press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    wheel bearing retaining ring
     

  6.  
  7. Using press tools 49 G033 105, 49 F027 009; press in the hub assembly.

    Snap ring
     
    Knuckle assembly, tighten the upper bolt to the specifications shown in the illustration
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Upper lateral link ball joint
     
    Upper leading link ball joint
     
    Tie rod end to the knuckle
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, tighten the nut to 174-235 ft. lbs. (236-318 Nm) and stake the nut
     
    Wheels

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering knuckle from the vehicle
     
    Inner oil seal from the knuckle
     

  4.  
  5. Using Mazda Hub Puller tools 49 G033 102, 49 G033 104 and 49 G033 105, pull the front wheel hub from the knuckle assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bearing inner race from the front wheel hub
     
    Retaining ring from within the knuckle
     
    Front wheel bearing from the knuckle, using the hub puller tools
     
    Brake dust shield
     

  8.  
  9. Clean and inspect all parts but do not wash or clean the wheel bearing. The bearing must be replaced.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Using Mazda Press tools 49 G033 107 and 49 H026 103, install a new dust shield cover assembly to the knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Using the press tools, press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel bearing retaining ring
     
    New oil seal using Installation tool 49 V001 795
     
    Front wheel hub using the Mazda press tools
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    NOTE
    The wheel bearings are not serviceable. If the bearings are bad, a new hub/bearing assembly must be installed.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Hub center dust cap
     

  4.

    Brake caliper
     
    Brake rotor

    Wheels
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, unstake the nut prior to removal.
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Tie rod end from the knuckle
     
    Damper fork-to-control arm bolt
     
    Front lower control arm ball joints
     
    Front upper arm ball joint
     
    Wheel hub dust cover
     
    Hub bolts and the hub
     
    Hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 F026 10, 49 G033 102 and 49 G033 105. If the bearing inner race remains in the hub, grind a section of the bearing inner race until 0.02 inch (0.5mm) remains and use a chisel to remove it.
     
    Snap ring
     
    Bearing from the hub using a press and the tools illustrated
     
    Brake dust shield, if it is being replaced. Mark the cover and knuckle for replacement purposes and use a chisel to remove the shield.
     

  6.  
  7. Clean and inspect all parts but do not wash or clean the wheel bearing. The bearing must be replaced.

To install:

  1. Using the tools illustrated, install a new dust shield cover assembly to the knuckle, if removed.
  2.  
  3. Using the tools illustrated, press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle assembly and install the snap ring.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel bearing retaining ring
     

  6.  
  7. Using the tools illustrated, press in the hub assembly.

    Wheel hub dust cover
     
    Front upper arm ball joint and tighten the nut to 29-39 ft. lbs. (39-53 Nm)
     
    Front lower arm ball joints and tighten the nuts to 122-147 ft. lbs. (166-200 Nm)
     
    Damper fork bolt and tighten to 68-93 ft. lbs. (93-126 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end to the knuckle and tighten the nut to 29-39 ft. lbs. (39-53 Nm) and install a new cotter pin
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Halfshaft axle nut, tighten the nut to 173-202 ft. lbs. (235-274 Nm) and stake the nut
     
    Wheels

    Bearing from the hub using a press and Mazda tools 49 G033 102 and 49 G033 106
     
    Brake dust shield, if it is being replaced. Mark the cover and knuckle for replacement purposes and use a chisel to remove the shield.
     

  6.  
  7. Clean and inspect all parts but do not wash or clean the wheel bearing. The bearing must be replaced.

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel bearing retaining ring

  7. Using press tools 49 G033 105, 49 F027 009; press in the hub assembly.

    New oil seal using installation tool 49 V001 795
     
    Knuckle assembly, tighten the upper bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) and the lower bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm)
     
    Control arm ball joint to the knuckle
     
    Tie rod end to the knuckle
     
    Brake rotor and caliper
