The fuel filter on most Mazda cars can be located on a bracket in the left rear of the engine compartment, next to or beneath the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir or as part of the fuel pump assembly.

The filter on Mazda3 models is part of the fuel pump assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Cruise control actuator with the harness and cable connected on 2.0L (FS) engines
     
    Air cleaner assembly, 2.5L (KL) engines
     
    Harness from the filter
     
    Fuel hoses from the filter
     
    Fuel filter
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  
  3. Pressurize the fuel system and check all connections for leaks.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle.

    Fuel filter protector
     
    Fuel lines by squeezing the tabs. Cover the lines to prevent leakage and contamination.
     
    Filter bracket and the filter. Mark the filter and bracket to aid for correct installation
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Filter and bracket aligning the marks made during removal. Tighten the bracket bolts to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Fuel lines making sure the tabs on the fittings are firmly engaged by pulling lightly on the lines
     
    Fuel filter protector
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, then lower the vehicle.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel lines by squeezing the tabs. Cover the lines to prevent leakage and contamination.
     
    Filter bracket and the filter. Mark the filter and bracket to aid for correct installation
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Filter and bracket aligning the marks made during removal
     
    Fuel lines making sure the tabs on the fittings are firmly engaged by pulling lightly on the lines
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, then lower the vehicle.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Insure the ignition switch is OFF .
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Trunk mat
     
    Service hole cover
     
    Fuel lines from both ends of the fuel filter
     
    Fuel filter and bracket
     
    Fuel filter from the mounting bracket
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Filter in the bracket. Torque the nut to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
     
    Fuel lines to the filter
     
    Service hole cover
     
    Trunk mat
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Run the engine and check for any fuel leaks.
  4.  

Fuel Pump-Mounted Filter



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel pump cover plate
     
    Fuel lines from the fuel pump
     

  6.  
  7. Raise the fuel pump from the tank.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel filter assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel filter to the fuel pump. Lower the pump assembly into position
     
    Fuel lines
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel pump cover plate
  6.  

Inline Filter



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Note the direction of the flow arrow on the filter so the replacement filter can be installed in the correct position.



    Negative battery cable

    Air intake hose and/or filter housing, if necessary
     
    Fuel line clamps, if equipped
     
    Fuel lines from the filter and plug the openings
     
    Filter clamp bolt/nut by loosening them.
     
    Fuel filter from its mounting bracket
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Fuel filter in its mounting bracket, making sure the flow arrow is pointing in the proper direction
     
    Fuel lines to the fuel filter
     
    Fuel line clamps, if equipped
     
    Air intake hose and/or filter housing, if removed
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Pressurize the fuel system and check all connections for leaks.
  4.
