  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the battery, wait for more than 1 minute for the SAS to deplete its stored energy.

  4.  
  5. Place the wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
  6.  
  7. Remove the SAS module and the steering wheel removing or disconnecting the following:

    Cover clips at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    Steering wheel-to-SAS module bolts
     
    SAS module from the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connector
     
    Steering wheel-to-column nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column using a suitable puller
     
    Clock spring
     
    Connector, screws and switch

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install switch, tighten the screws and attach the connector.
  2.  
  3. Set the front wheels straight ahead. Install the clock spring.
    CAUTION
    The clock spring will break if over wound. Do not force the clock spring when turning it.

  4.  
  5. Turn the clock spring clockwise until it stops.
  6.  
  7. Turn the clock spring counterclockwise 2.75 turns.
  8.  
  9. Align the mark on the clock spring with the mark on the outer housing.

  11. Install the SAS module and the steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:

    Steering wheel and the steering wheel-to-column nut. Torque the steering wheel nut to 29-36 ft. lbs. (40-49 Nm).
     
    SAS module to the steering wheel and connect the electrical connector. Torque the steering column-to-SAS module bolts to 70-104 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
     
    Steering wheel-to-SAS module clips
     
    Cover clips, at both sides of the steering wheel

  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Mazda 3
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver-s side front scuff plate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driver-s side front side trim.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood release lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the switch connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screws, then remove the switch.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  

Mazda 6
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    WARNING
    Handling the air bag module improperly can accidentally operate (deploy) the air bag module, which may seriously injure you.

  4.  
  5. Remove the air bag cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt.
  8.  
  9. Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate and unplug the connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the driver-s side air bag module.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lockbolt.
    WARNING
    Handling the air bag module improperly can accidentally deploy the air bag module, which may seriously injure you.


    CAUTION
    Do not try to remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. The column will collapse.

  14.  
  15. Set the vehicle in the straight-ahead position.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel using a suitable puller.
  18.  
  19. Remove the column cover.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the switch connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the screws, then remove the switch.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch and screws and attach the connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the column covers.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel and tighten the locknut to 30-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the air bag module and related components in the reverse of removal.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  12.  
  13. Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds.
  14.  

Mazda6 And Mazdaspeed6
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    WARNING
    Handling the air bag module improperly can accidentally operate (deploy) the air bag module, which may seriously injure you.

  4.  
  5. Remove the air bag cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt.
  8.  
  9. Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate and unplug the connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drivers side air bag module.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lockbolt.
    WARNING
    Handling the air bag module improperly can accidentally deploy the air bag module, which may seriously injure you.

    Do not try to remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. The column will collapse.

  15. Set the vehicle in the straight-ahead position.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel using a suitable puller.
  18.  
  19. Remove the column cover.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the switch connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the screws, then remove the switch.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch and screws and attach the connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the column covers.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel and tighten the locknut to 30-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the air bag module and related components in the reverse of removal.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  12.  
  13. Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds.
  14.  

Miata
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the battery, wait for more than 1 minute for the SAS to deplete its stored energy.

  4.  
  5. Remove the SAS module and the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Place the wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to LOCK
     
    Cover clips at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    Steering wheel-to-SAS module bolts
     
    SAS module from the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connector
     
    Steering wheel-to-column nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column using a suitable puller

To install:

  1. Install switch, tighten the screws and attach the connector.
  2.

  5. Turn the clock spring clockwise until it stops.
  6.

  11. Install or connect the following:

Millenia
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  5. Remove the SAS module and the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Place the wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to LOCK
     
    Cover clips at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    Steering wheel-to-SAS module clips
     
    SAS module from the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connector
     
    Steering wheel-to-column nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column using a suitable puller
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the switch connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws, then remove the switch.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Mx5-Miata
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    WARNING
    Handling the air bag module improperly can accidentally deploy the air bag module, which may seriously injure you.


    CAUTION
    Do not try to remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. The column will collapse.

  3. Set the vehicle in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel cover and bolt, then unplug the air bag connector and remove the air bag assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the locknut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel using a suitable puller.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clock spring screw, connector and clock spring
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the steering angle sensor connector, if equipped
  14.  
  15. Remove the screws and then remove the combination switch.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch.
  2.  
  3. Connect the steering angle sensor connector, if equipped
  4.  
  5. Install the clock spring.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the clock spring as follows:
    CAUTION
    If the clock spring is not adjusted, the spring wire in the clock spring could over-wind and break when the steering wheel is turned. Always adjust the clock spring after installing it.


    CAUTION
    The clock spring will break if over-wound. Do not forcibly turn the clock spring.



    Set the front tires straight-ahead
     



    Turn the clock spring clockwise until it stops

    From the stopped position, turn the clock spring counterclockwise 2 3 / 4 turns
     
    Align the marks.
     

  8.  
  9. Install the remaining components in the reverse of removal.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering wheel and tighten the locknut to 29-40 ft. lbs. (40-54 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the air bag module and related components in the reverse of removal.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  18.  
  19. Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approximately 6 seconds.
  20.  
  21. After installing the combination switch, perform the steering angle sensor initialization procedure as follows:
    WARNING
    Unless the initialization procedure of the steering angle sensor is completed, the DSC will not operate, causing an unexpected accident. Therefore, always perform the initialization procedure to ensure DSC operation if the power supply to the steering angle sensor has been cut off due to disconnection of the steering angle sensor connector or negative battery cable, or any other cause.


    NOTE
    The initialization value of the steering angle sensor is stored using the battery power supply. Therefore, the battery power supply of the steering angle sensor is cut and the stored initialization value is cleared when any of the following items are performed.



    Negative battery cable disconnection
     
    Steering angle sensor connector disconnection
     
    Fuse (ROOM 15A) removal
     
    Wiring harness disconnection between battery and steering angle sensor connector
     
    Inspect the wheel alignment, inflation pressure, and the installation condition of the steering wheel
     
    If there is any malfunction, adjust the applicable part
     
    Connect the negative battery cable
     
    Turn the ignition switch to the ON position
     
    Confirm that the DSC indicator light illuminates and that the DSC OFF light flashes
     
    Turn the steering wheel to full right lock, then turn it to full left lock
     
    Confirm that the DSC OFF light goes out
     
    Turn the ignition switch off
     
    Turn the ignition switch to the ON position again, and confirm that the DSC indicator light goes out
     
    If the DSC indicator light does not go out, disconnect the negative battery cable, and perform the procedure again
     
    Drive the vehicle for about 10 minutes and confirm that the ABS warning and DSC indicator lights do not illuminate
     

    1. If the initialization procedure of the steering angle signal is not completed, the DSC will not operate properly and may cause an accident. Therefore, always perform initialization of the DSC HU/CM steering angle signal to ensure proper DSC operation when any of the following items are performed.

      Steering angle sensor replacement DSC HU/CM replacement
       
      Inspect the wheel alignment and inflation pressure.
       
      Park the vehicle on level ground
       
      Turn the ignition switch off
       
      Connect the WDS or equivalent to the DLC-2
       
      Access the active command mode, select the following commands, and then follow the indication on the monitor
       
      Drive the vehicle forward
       
      After 5 min of driving, verify that the DSC system is normal
       

    2.  
    3. When installing the center panel unit, make sure that the wiring harness and antenna feeder are not caught between the unit and dashboard. If the wiring harness or the antenna feeder is caught between the unit and dashboard, it may cause malfunctions.
    4.  
    5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    6.  
    7. Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approx. 6 seconds and goes out.
    8.  
    9. If the air bag system warning light does not operate normally, inspect the system.
    10.

  23. Install the remaining components in the reverse of removal.
  24.  

Protege
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the battery, wait for more than 1 minute for the SAS to deplete its stored energy.

  4.  
  5. Place the wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
  6.  
  7. Remove the SAS module and the steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Cover clips at both sides of the steering wheel
     
    Steering wheel-to-SAS module bolts
     
    SAS module from the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connector
     
    Steering wheel-to-column nut
     
    Steering wheel from the steering column using a suitable puller
     
    Clock spring
     
    Connector, screws and switch

  8.  

To install:

  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
