Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle assembly with a jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Top strut nuts
     



    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
     
    Strut assembly
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s) and tighten to 56-74 ft. lbs. (76-101 Nm)
     
    Upper mounting nuts and tighten to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-28 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel(s)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle assembly with a jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Top strut and bracket retainers
     
    Bracket
     



    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
     
    Strut assembly

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Bracket and position the strut and bracket as illustrated. Tighten the bracket bolts to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-51 Nm).
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s) and tighten to 68-93 ft. lbs. (93-126 Nm)
     
    Upper mounting retainers and tighten to 63-85 ft. lbs. (86-116 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    NOTE
    Refer the exploded view illustration for component locations and if applicable, their retainer torque specifications.


    CAUTION
    Performing the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the wiring harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedures, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor (axle side) and fix it to an appropriate place where the sensor will not be pulled while servicing the vehicle.

  2.  
  3. If removing the left side, remove the fuel tank protector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the parking brake cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper without disconnecting the hose, and support the caliper with wire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear lateral link upper bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer control link upper nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear shock absorber lower bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear shock absorber and coil spring.
  16.  

To install:

To install:

  1. Install the components in the reverse order of removal using the accompanying illustration for torque values.
  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar nut
     
    Lower arm ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Lower arm bolts
     
    Lower the lower and upper arms and remove the shock. Be careful not to lower the arms too much or it may cause damage.
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the upper shock nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm) and the lower shock nut and bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).

  3. Check and/or adjust the front end alignment.
