Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    NOTE
    Refer the exploded view illustration for component locations and if applicable, their retainer torque specifications.


    CAUTION
    Removing or installing the shock absorber and coil spring is dangerous. The shock absorber and coil spring could fly off and cause serious injury or death, and damage the vehicle.

  2.  
  3. Remove the rear shock absorber and coil spring.
    WARNING
    Before removing the piston rod nut, secure the shock absorber and spring in a suitable spring compressor. Otherwise, the shock absorber and spring could fly off under tremendous pressure and cause serious injury or death, or damage to vehicle parts.

  4.  
  5. Protect the coil spring from scratches using a piece of cloth and install the spring compressor.
  6.  
  7. Compress the coil spring and remove the piston rod nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the following:

    Retainer
     
    Bushing
     
    Upper spring seat
     
    Spring seat rubber
     
    Spacer
     
    Bushing
     
    Stopper casing and bound stopper
     
    Bound stopper
     
    Collar
     
    Stopper casing
     
    Coil spring
     
    Shock absorber
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the following:

    Shock absorber so that the lower end of the coil spring is seated on the step of the lower spring seat
     
    Coil spring lead lower end of the lower spring seat facing the direction shown in the illustration
     
    Stopper casing
     
    Collar so that the tapered side is facing downward as shown in the illustration
     
    Bound stopper
     
    Stopper casing and bound stopper
     
    Bushing
     
    Spacer
     
    Spring seat rubber to the upper spring seat as shown in the illustration
     
    Upper spring seat
     
    Bushing
     
    Retainer

  3. Install the piston rod nut and tighten to 38-46 Nm (28-34 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut assembly.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar nut
     
    Lower arm ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Lower arm bolts
     
    Lower the lower and upper arms and remove the shock. Be careful not to lower the arms too much or it may cause damage.
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the upper shock nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm) and the lower shock nut and bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Check and/or adjust the front end alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Rear package trim
     
    Speed sensor harness
     
    Top strut nuts
     

  4.  


NOTE
The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
 
Strut assembly
 

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s) and tighten to 55-61 ft. lbs. (74-83 Nm)
     
    Upper mounting nuts and tighten to 33-46 ft. lbs. (47-62 Nm)
     
    Speed sensor harness
     
    Rear package trim
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Side trim panels from the inside of the trunk or the rear seat and trim, as required
     
    Wiring and cap, if equipped with Automatic Adjusting Suspension (AAS) system
     
    Top strut nuts
     



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Brake line or wiring retainers, as required
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
     
    Strut assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
     
    Brake line or wiring retainers, as required
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Top strut nuts
     
    Wiring and cap, if equipped with AAS system
     
    Side trim panels to the inside of the trunk or the rear seat and trim, as required
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle assembly with a jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Top strut nuts
     



    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
     
    Strut assembly
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s) and tighten to 56-74 ft. lbs. (76-101 Nm)
     
    Upper mounting nuts and tighten to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-28 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel(s)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle assembly with a jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Top strut and bracket retainers
     
    Bracket
     



    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Bracket and position the strut and bracket as illustrated. Tighten the bracket bolts to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-51 Nm).
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s) and tighten to 68-93 ft. lbs. (93-126 Nm)
     
    Upper mounting retainers and tighten to 63-85 ft. lbs. (86-116 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Speed sensor harness
     
    Rear seat belt on 4SD models or trunk side trim on the 5HB.
     
    Clip and brake hose
     
    Stabilizer link nut
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt
     
    Cap
     
    Top strut nuts
     



    Strut assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Upper mounting nuts and tighten to 34-46 ft. lbs. (47-62 Nm)
     
    Cap
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt and tighten to 68-93 ft. lbs. (94-126 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link nut and tighten to 32-44 ft. lbs. (44-60 Nm)
     
    Brake hose and clip
     
    Rear seat belt on 4SD models or trunk side trim on the 5HB.
     
    Speed sensor harness
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The suspension will drop when the weight lifts off the wheels.



    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Rear package front trim
     
    Speed sensor harness
     
    Lower lateral link ball joint
     
    Top strut nuts
     
    Stiffener
     



    Bottom strut mount bolt(s)
     
    Strut assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Stiffener. Make sure the word OUT faces up and the parting area faces the inside of the vehicle.
     
    Strut assembly
     
    Bottom strut mount bolt(s) and tighten to 76-101 ft. lbs. (102-137 Nm)
     
    Upper mounting nuts and tighten to 34-46 ft. lbs. (47-62 Nm)
     
    Lower lateral link ball joint, tighten the nut to 115 ft. lbs. (156 Nm) and install a new cotter pin
     
    Speed sensor harness
     
    Rear package front trim
     
    Rear wheel(s)
