Operation

The TPS is a variable resistor. As the accelerator pedal is depressed and released, the resistance inside the sensor changes. The computer uses this reading to determine proper air/fuel mixture and ignition timing settings.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the necessary air intake components to access the TPS.
  4.
  5. Detach the electrical wire harness plug from the sensor.
  6.
  7. Paint an alignment mark on the sensor housing to the throttle body.
  8.
  9. Remove the sensor attaching bolts.
  10.
  11. Remove the sensor from the throttle body.
  12.
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Testing

2.3L L4
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON position (Engine OFF).
  2.
  3. Measure voltage between the PCM terminal 3M and ground Standard value:
    1. Closed throttle-0.40-0.60 volts.
    2.
    3. Wide open throttle-4.25-4.75 volts.
    4.

  4.
  5. Measure voltage between the PCM terminal 3J and ground. Standard value:
    1. Closed throttle-4.40-4.60 volts
    2.
    3. Wide open throttle-0.25-0.75 volts.
    4.

  6.
  7. If within specifications, check wiring and/or connectors and repair/replace as necessary.
  8.
  9. If not within specifications, replace the throttle body.
  10.

3.0L V6
  1. Connect a suitable scan tool to the diagnostic connector.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to ON position.
  4.
  5. Monitor TP1 and TP2 percentage values. Standard value:
    1. TP1 Closed throttle-83.04-91.54 %.
    2.
    3. TP1 Wide open throttle-5.84-25.62 %.
    4.
    5. TP2 Closed throttle-6.16-21.26 %.
    6.
    7. TP2 Wide open throttle-84.54-92.96 %.
