Removal & Installation



2.0L (Lf) & 2.3L (L3) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Vent hose
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose
     
    Rocker arm cover and discard the gasket
     

  4.  
  5. Clean all mating surfaces of any residual gasket material.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

  3. Apply a 0.16-0.24 inch (4-7mm) bead of silicone sealant to cylinder head at the areas illustrated. Make sure to install the cover within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arm cover with a new gasket. Torque the bolts in the sequence illustrated to 71-92 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm) on all Mazda3 engines, 71-101inch lbs. (8--11.5 Nm) on Mazda6 models, or 71-93 inch lbs. (8--10.5 Nm) on Mazdaspeed6 equipped with the 2.3L (L3) engine.
     
    Remaining components removed to facilitate the rocker arm cover removal
     
    Negative battery cable

  6.  

3.0L (Aj) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Any components that would interfere with cover removal
     
    Rocker arm cover bolts in the sequence illustrated
     
    Rocker arm cover and discard the gasket
     

  4.  
  5. Clean all mating surfaces of any residual gasket material.

  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply silicone sealant to cylinder head at the areas illustrated.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arm cover with a new gasket.
     
    Oil control valve with the cylinder head cover raised as shown in the accompanying illustration, being careful not to let the valve retaining bolt slip into the timing chain cover when installing and tighten the valve bolt to 71-106 INCH LBS. (8-12 Nm). Torque the bolts in the sequence illustrated to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
     
    Remaining components removed to facilitate the rocker arm cover removal
     
    Negative battery cable
