  4.
  5. Adjust the drive belt deflection and tension by turning adjusting bolt B to the specification.
    1. Drive belt deflection (with pressure of 22 lbs. [98 N]): 3.3-4.0mm (0.13-0.15 in).
    2.
    3. Drive belt tension (when using the SST): 117-138 lbs. (519-617 N).
    4.

  6.
  7. Tighten idle pulley locknut A to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  8.
  9. Crank the engine, then measure the deflection and tension again. If not within specifications, repeat Steps 2-5.
  10.
  11. Install the engine cover

  4.
  5. Adjust the drive belt deflection and tension by turning adjusting bolt C to the specification:
    1. Drive belt deflection (with pressure of 22 lbs. [98 N]): 4.5-5.0mm (0.18-0.19 in).
    2.
    3. Drive belt tension (when using the SST): 117-149 lbs. (519-666 N).
    4.

  6.
  7. Tighten generator installation bolt A and locknut B, to the following:
    1. Bolt A: 29-37 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
    2.
    3. Locknut B: 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
    4.

  8.
  9. Crank the engine and measure the deflection and tension again. If not within the specification, repeat Steps 2 & 3.
  10.
  11. Install the engine cover

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

WARNING
The drive belt deflection can be inspected only between specified pulleys. Perform the drive belt deflection/tension inspection when the engine is cold, or at least 30 min after the engine has stopped. If the drive belt exceeds the deflection/tension limit, adjust it to the deflection/tension used when adjusting, as outlined in this section..

After replacing with a new drive belt, assemble with the deflection/tension specified for a new drive belt. Operate the alternator drive belt for 1 min or more and the A/C drive belt for 5 min or more while idling the engine. Then adjust it to the used belt deflection/tension specifications.

  1. Remove the engine cover.

  2.
  3. Apply a pressure of about 22 lbs. (98 N) to the back of the drive belt, in the middle of the pulleys shown in the figure and inspect the deflection. Otherwise, inspect the tension using the Special Service Tool (SST), as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  4.
  5. If the drive belt deflection is at the deflection limit or more, or the drive belt tension is at the tension limit or less, the belt tension must be adjusted, as outlined in this section.
  6.
  7. When finished, install the engine cover.

  6.

To install:

  1. Install the drive belt and adjust the drive belt deflection by tightening adjusting bolt B to the specifications given in the Adjustment procedure in this section.
    WARNING
When installing a new drive belt, assemble it with the deflection/tension specifications for new drive belt, then start the engine and operate the drive belt for 5 min or longer while idling the engine. Then adjust the belt to the used deflection/tension specifications.

  2.
  3. Tighten idle pulley locknut A to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  4.
  5. Crank the engine and measure the deflection and tension again, as outlined in this section. If not within specifications, go back to Step 2 and repeat the steps.
  6.
  7. Install the engine cover
