Rear Main Seal


Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Transmission assembly
    Clutch/flywheel assembly, if equipped with a manual transaxle/transmission
    Flexplate/shim plates, if equipped with an automatic transaxle/transmission
    Using special tools 49 1881-055A and 49-0820-035, remove the counterweight locknut.
    Using special tools 49 1881-055A and 49-0839-305A, remove the counterweight
    Place a rag over the eccentric shaft and using a prytool, carefully pry the oil seal from the oil seal housing.

  5. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.

To install:

  1. Clean the oil seal housing. Coat the lip of the oil seal and the housing with clean engine oil.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New oil seal into the housing by tapping it evenly into place with a hammer and a seal installer until it is flush with the edge of the rear cover
    Install the key into the eccentric shaft and install the counterweight
    Apply sealant to the seating face then install the locknut and loosely tighten.
    Lock the counterweight using the special tools, then tighten the locknut to 290-361 ft. lbs. (392-490 Nm).
    Clutch/flywheel assembly or the flexplate, as applicable
    Negative battery cable

  5. On models with dynamic suspension, perform the steering angle sensor initialization procedure.
