Removal & Installation




WARNING
Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately.


CAUTION
Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  11. Disconnect the brake lines.

  13. Remove the bolt.

  15. Remove the remaining bolts and the HCU.
    NOTE
    The 4x2 and 4x4 modules are not interchangeable. Before installing a module, verify its application.

  17. Remove the screws and the control module, if necessary.
  18.  
  19. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque all fasteners to specification.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the HCU after performing this procedure.

WARNING
Use of any other than approved DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION
Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can be damaged if exposed to these charges.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet pipe.

  7. Disconnect the electrical connector by rotating the protective cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and cap the brake line fittings.
  10.  
  11. Remove the HCU bracket-to-frame bolts.
  12.  
  13. If replacing only the HCU, remove the ABS module screws and the ABS module.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bracket-to-HCU bolts and remove the HCU.
  16.  
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque the following fasteners:

    Brake tube fittings: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    HCU bracket-to-frame bolts: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
     
    ABS module screws: 18 inch lbs (2 Nm)

  19. Bleed the brake system.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.

  9. Remove the screws and the control module.
    NOTE
