Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery and tray
     
    Breather tube
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Intake tube and air cleaner cover
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Transaxle Range (TR) sensor
     
    Heated Oxygen (H0 2 S) sensors
     
    Transaxle harness connector and bracket
     
    Wire harness bracket spacer and move the bracket aside
     
    Shift cable
     
    Shift cable bracket and move the bracket aside
     
    Starter electrical connectors
     
    Starter
     
    Electrical connectors from the valve cover and install an engine support bar
     
    Upper transaxle retaining bolts
     
    Left side upper transaxle mounting plate
     
    Rear transaxle mount
     
    Right side engine mount bolt and slightly raise the engine
     
    Both front wheels and splash shields
     
    Right side halfshaft and intermediate shaft assembly after matchmarking them
     
    Cross brace
     
    Center exhaust pipe and rubber hanger
     
    Front exhaust pipe and flange
     
    Rear exhaust pipe flange
     
    Driveshaft
     
    PTU vent tube
     
    Lower transaxle bracket
     
    Access cover
     
    Flexplate nuts
     
    Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor
     
    Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor
     
    Fluid cooler tube and move it aside
     
    Fluid cooler line and install a transaxle jack
     
    Bolts from the PTU unit
     
    Transaxle with the PTU unit attached
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle with the PTU unit. Torque the engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Fluid cooler line. Torque the fastener to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm) and remove the transaxle jack.
     
    Fluid cooler tube. Torque the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    OSS sensor
     
    TSS sensor
     
    Flexplate nuts. Torque the nuts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Access cover
     
    Cross brace. Torque the bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
     
    Transaxle bracket. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    PTU vent tube
     
    Driveshaft. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Exhaust pipe and flange. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Exhaust pipe and rubber hanger. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Left side halfshaft assembly
     
    Right side halfshaft and intermediate shaft assembly by aligning the matchmarks
     
    Splash shields
     
    Both front wheels and lower the engine on to the right side engine mount
     
    Right side engine mount bolt. Torque the bolt to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
     
    Rear transaxle mount. Torque the upper bolt to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) and the lower bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
     
    Transaxle mount assemble. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) and remove the engine support bar.
     
    Electrical connectors to the valve cover
     
    Starter. Torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Starter electrical connectors
     
    Shifter cable and bracket. Torque the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) and connect the shifter cable.
     
    Wire harness and install the harness bracket spacer
     
    Wire harness bracket. Torque the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    H0 2 S sensor
     
    TR sensor and make certain it is properly aligned
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Intake tube and air cleaner cover
     
    Breather tube
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Battery tray
     
    Battery and cables

  3. Fill the transaxle with clean fluid to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary
  6.  

2.3L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the battery and the battery tray.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, disconnect the PTO vent hose from the clip located on the fill tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three bolts holding the shift cable bracket and ground wires and unplug the transaxle electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two bolts from the shift cable bracket and disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle manual lever.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transaxle range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the three upper transaxle retaining bolts. Install engine support tools 303-290A, 303-290A-01, 303-290A-03A, 303-D089 and 303-050.
  20.  
  21. Loosen but do not remove the four retaining nuts holding the bracket to the transaxle case. Remove the left side upper transaxle mount bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the six bolts holding the halfshaft to the PTO. Position the halfshaft to the side.
  24.  
  25. Remove the four bolts and remove the cross brace. Remove the seven retainers and the left side splash shields.
  26.  
  27. Remove the seven retainers and the right side splash shield. Remove the bolt for the mount and the two bolts for the cross brace. Remove the rear nut and the cross brace.
  28.  
  29. Remove and discard the left side front axle wheel hub nut. Remove the frame bolt from the left side and right side control arms.
  30.  
  31. Using special tool 205-D070, separate the left side halfshaft from the front wheel knuckle. Using tools 100-001 and 205-241 to remove the left and right side halfshaft.
  32.  
  33. Remove the two intermediate shaft retaining nuts. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  34.  
  35. Remove the two nuts which hold the exhaust bracket to the rear engine mount.
  36.  
  37. Remove the two nuts and bolts on the outer end of the exhaust to rear engine mount bracket and remove the bracket.
  38.  
  39. Remove the three nuts and separate the flexpipe from the exhaust manifold.
  40.  
  41. For vehicles so equipped, remove the six bolts holding the engine bracket to the PTO. Remove the bracket. Remove the three bolts and the PTO assembly.
  42.  
  43. For vehicles not equipped with a PTO, remove the dampener.
  44.  
  45. Remove the three bolts holding the transaxle front mount plate. Remove the fluid cooler line. Remove the fluid cooler tube. Remove the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector and remove the sensor.
  46.  
  47. Remove the starter. Remove the starter insulator.
  48.  
  49. Remove and discard the four torque converter retaining nuts. Push the torque converter back from the flexplate.
  50.  
  51. Use a suitable transaxle jack to support the transaxle and remove the bolt from the lower front case.
  52.  
  53. Remove the four remaining transaxle to engine mounting bolts. Remove the transaxle rear mount.
    NOTE
    Move the transaxle back far enough to install tool 307-346, which locks the torque converter in position prior to lower the transaxle from the vehicle.

  55. Lower the transaxle from the engine compartment.
  56.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use new bolts and nuts, as required.
  4.  
  5. Fill the transaxle with the proper grade and type automatic transaxle fluid.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for transaxle fluid leaks, correct as required.
  8.  
  9. Check and correct the fluid level as required.
  10.  

3.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the battery and the battery tray.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the transaxle range (TR) sensor electrical connector. Disconnect the transaxle harness connector. Remove the wire harness bracket nut and position the harness aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove the main control cover vent tube. Disconnect the EVAP and PTO vent hoses from the transaxle filler tube. Disconnect the wire harness from the battery tray hold down bracket.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever. Remove the two retaining bolts from the shift cable bracket. Position the cable and bracket to the side. Remove the starter.
  16.  
  17. Install engine support tools 303-290A, 303-290A-01 and 303-290A-03A, 303-D089 and 303-050.
    NOTE
    Remove and disconnect both electrical connectors from the upper intake to gain access to the engine for installing the lifting bracket

  18.  
  19. Remove the upper transaxle retaining bolts. Loosen but do not remove the four retaining nuts holding the bracket to the transaxle case. Remove the left side upper transaxle mount bolt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the right side upper engine mount bolt.
  22.  
  23. Using the engine lifting tool, raise the front of the engine. It is necessary to raise the engine a couple of inches in order to remove the transaxle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the seven retainers and the left side splash shield. Rekmove the seven retainers and the right side splash shield.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the sway bar link. Remove the tie rod end cotter pin, lower knuckle bolt and tie rod retaining nut.
  28.  
  29. Use special tool 211-105 and disconnect the left and right tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  30.  
  31. Carefully pry down on the left and right lower control arms and disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint and position the steering knuckle aside.
  32.  
  33. Using tools 100-001 and 205-241, remove the right side outer halfshaft. Using a prybar between the transaxle case and the left side halfshaft carefully disconnect the halfshaft from the transaxle case.
  34.  
  35. Remove the alternator shield retaining screw and remove the shield. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector and unclip the two clips from the oil pan bolt studs.
  36.  
  37. Remove the two intermediate shaft retaining nuts. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  38.  
  39. Remove the cross brace. Disconnect the exhaust pipe. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe flange. Disconnect the rear exhaust pipe flange and remove the exhaust pipe.
  40.  
  41. If equipped with a PTO, remove the rear driveshaft and position it to the side. Remove the bolts and the PTO bracket.
    NOTE
    On four wheel drive vehicles, remove the right exhaust manifold to gain access to the PTO bracket.

  42.  
  43. Remove the bolt for the mount and the two bolts for the cross brace. Remove the rear nut and the cross brace.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the lower mount bracket.
  46.  
  47. For vehicles not equipped with a PTO, remover the dampener assembly.
  48.  
  49. If equipped, remove the transfer case retaining bolts. Remove the transfer case.
  50.  
  51. Remove the center bolt from the rear transaxle mount.
  52.  
  53. Lower the transaxle enough to clear the frame.
    NOTE
    It is necessary to lower the transaxle in order to clear the subframe in order to remove the transaxle.

  54.  
  55. Remove the torque converter access cover. Remove and discard the four torque converter retaining nuts. Push the torque converter back from the flexplate.
  56.  
  57. Remove the fluid cooler line. Remove the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector and remove the sensor. Remove the fluid cooler tube.
  58.  
  59. Use a suitable transaxle jack to support the transaxle and remove the transaxle to engine retaining bolts. Remove the transaxle mount bracket.
    NOTE
    Move the transaxle back far enough to install tool 307-346, which locks the torque converter in position prior to lower the transaxle from the vehicle.

  61. Lower the transaxle from the engine compartment.

To install:
