    Removal & Installation



    2.0L Engine
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Drive belt
       
      Alternator electrical connectors and loosen the upper alternator bolt while moving the alternator to the rear of the engine
       
      Alternator. Torque the lower bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48Nm). Torque the upper bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       

    2.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Alternator with the upper bolt in the alternator before installation. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Alternator electrical connectors
       
      Drive belt
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  

    1. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Drive belt
       
      Alternator electrical connectors and loosen the upper alternator bolt while moving the alternator to the rear of the engine
       
      Alternator. Torque the lower bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48Nm). Torque the upper bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       

    2.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Alternator with the upper bolt in the alternator before installation. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Alternator electrical connectors
       
      Drive belt
       
      Negative battery cable

    1. Disconnect the battery.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front end accessory drive belt tensioner. Rotate the front end accessory drive belt tensioner counter-clockwise to loosen tension on the front end accessory drive belt.

    5. Remove the front end accessory drive belt.
    6.  
    7. Remove the alternator B+ terminal.
    8.  
    9. Remove the alternator electrical connector.
    10.  
    11. Remove the alternator lower air duct bolt.
    12.  
    13. Remove the alternator lower air duct. Press the locking tab to release the lower air duct from the upper air duct.
    14.  
    15. Remove the pin-type retainer.
    16.  
    17. Remove the alternator shield .
    18.  
    19. Remove the alternator stud nut.
    20.  
    21. Remove the alternator stud.
    22.  
    23. Remove the alternator bolts.
    24.  
    25. Remove the alternator.
    26.  
    27. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Observe the following torques:

      Alternator mounting bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
       
      Alternator stud: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
       
      Stud nut: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
       
      Shield nut: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
       
      Lower air duct bolt: 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm)

    1. Disconnect the battery.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front end accessory drive belt tensioner. Rotate the front end accessory drive belt tensioner counter-clockwise to loosen tension on the front end accessory drive belt.

    5. Remove the front end accessory drive belt.
    6.  
    7. Remove the alternator B+ terminal.
    8.  
    9. Remove the alternator electrical connector.
    10.  
    11. Remove the alternator lower air duct bolt.
    12.  
    13. Remove the alternator lower air duct. Press the locking tab to release the lower air duct from the upper air duct.
    14.  
    15. Remove the pin-type retainer.
    16.  
    17. Remove the alternator shield .
    18.  
    19. Remove the alternator stud nut.
    20.  
    21. Remove the alternator stud.
    22.  
    23. Remove the alternator bolts.
    24.  
    25. Remove the alternator.
    26.  
    27. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Observe the following torques:

      Alternator mounting bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
       
      Alternator stud: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
       
      Stud nut: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
       
      Shield nut: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
       
      Lower air duct bolt: 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm)

    3.0L Engine
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Right side intermediate axle shaft
       
      Right side splash shield and retainers
       
      Drive belt
       
      Alternator electrical connectors
       
      Alternator. Torque the mounting and adjusting bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48Nm).
       

    2.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Alternator. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
       
      Alternator electrical connectors
       
      Drive belt
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  

    1. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Right side intermediate axle shaft
       
      Right side splash shield and retainers
       
      Drive belt
       
      Alternator electrical connectors
       
      Alternator. Torque the mounting and adjusting bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48Nm).
       

    2.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Alternator. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
       
      Alternator electrical connectors
       
      Drive belt
       
      Negative battery cable

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
      NOTE
      To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute before working on the vehicle. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

    4.  
    5. Remove the right side intermediate axle shaft.
    6.  
    7. Remove the lower splash shield retaining bolts and pin type retainers. Remove the lower splash shields.
      NOTE
      The left lower splash shield must be removed first.

    8.  
    9. Remove the nut and position the bracket and wiring harness to the side.
    10.  
    11. Rotate the front end accessory drive tensioner counterclockwise and position the accessory drive belt to the side.
    12.  
    13. Position the alternator B+ protective cover aside and remove the alternator B+ terminal.
    14.  
    15. Disconnect the alternator electrical connector.
      NOTE
      Discard the removed clip. A new harness tie wrap with clip, must be used for installation. Part number 1F20-61-147.

    16.  
    17. Remove the clip and cable from the alternator. Remove the alternator upper air duct bolt.
    18.  
    19. Loosen the two lower alternator bolts and remove the upper air duct.
    20.  
    21. Remove the pin type retainer from the alternator shield. Remove the bolt and alternator shield.
    22.  
    23. Remove the alternator stud nut. Remove the alternator stud. Remove the two alternator bolts.
    24.  
    25. Position the alternator to the side and remove the three alternator lower duct nuts.
    26.  
    27. Rotate the alternator to gain enough clearance and remove it through the opening in the fender well.
    28.  
    29. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
