Removal & Installation



3.0L Engine

CAUTION
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  4.  
  5. Remove the valve covers. Remove the oil pan. Remove the alternator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt and the camshaft position sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering pump and position it to the side.
    NOTE
    On some vehicles it may be necessary to remove the power steering pump pulley. The bolt positioned behind the power steering pressure tube will remain in the pump housing.

  10.  
  11. Install engine support tools 3030F072 and 303-050, to support the engine assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine support insulator.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt and the belt tensioner.
  16.  
  17. On 2005 vehicles, remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley bolt and the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Remove the CKP sensor.
    NOTE
    Remove the front cover with the vehicle raised in the air.

  20.  
  21. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front cover retaining bolts and studs. Remove the front cover from the engine.
  24.  

To install:


CAUTION
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive disks or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

  1. Clean and inspect the mounting surfaces of the engine and the front cover.
  2.  
  3. Install three new gaskets in the front cover.
    NOTE
    The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within four minutes of applying the silicone gasket and sealant.

  4.  
  5. Apply 0.24 inch diameter dot of silicone gasket and sealer to the cylinder block, lower cylinder block and cylinder head mating surfaces.
  6.  
  7. Position the cover on the engine and install the bolts and studs. Torque the bolts and studs to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
    NOTE
    On 2001-2004 engines, fasteners numbered 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15 and 16 are studs. On 2005 engines, fasteners numbered 1, 8, 13 and 16 are stud bolts.

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

CAUTION

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the five bolts and the pin type retainer and the lower right splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alternator upper air duct bolt. Remove the air duct.
  12.  
  13. Remove the alternator shield pin type retainer, bolt and alternator shield.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator bolts. Remove the alternator stud nut and position the alternator to the side.
  16.  
  17. Remove the valve covers. Remove the engine support insulator.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
  20.  
  21. Remove the nut and position the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector aside. Disconnect the CPK sensor electrical connector. Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering pump and position it to the side.
    NOTE
    The bolt positioned behind the power steering pressure tube will remain in the pump housing.

  25. If equipped, remove the three nuts and position the speed control actuator aside.
  26.  
  27. Remove the front cover retaining bolts. Remove the two oil pan to front cover retaining bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the bolts and studs and remove the cover from the engine. Discard the gaskets.
  30.  

To install:

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
