Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal

To install:

  1. Coat the oil seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft rear oil seal
     
    Flywheel
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal

To install:

  1. Coat the oil seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft rear oil seal
     
    Flywheel
     
    Negative battery cable

2.3L Engine
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, remove the automatic transaxle.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the manual transaxle and clutch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flexplate or flywheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate
  12.

To install:

  1. Using a seal installer, position the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate onto the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6.

NOTE
Special bolts are used for installation. Do not use standard bolts.

  1. Install the flywheel/flexplate. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in three stages.
    1. Stage 1: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
    2.  
    3. Stage 2: Tighten to 80 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
    4.  
    5. Stage 3: Tighten to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, remove the automatic transaxle.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the manual transaxle and clutch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flexplate or flywheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate

To install:

  1. Using a seal installer, position the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate onto the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

  5. Install the oil pan.
    NOTE
    Special bolts are used for flywheel (manual transaxle) or flexplate (automatic transaxle) installation. Do not use standard bolts.

  7. Install the flywheel (manual transaxle) or flexplate (automatic transaxle). Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in three stages.
    1. Stage 1: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
    2.  
    3. Stage 2: Tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
    4.  
    5. Stage 3: Tighten to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.).

3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Flexplate
     
    Rear main oil seal

  1. Coat the oil seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft rear oil seal
     
    Flywheel
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel (manual transaxle) or flexplate (automatic transaxle).
  8.  
  9. Using the rear main seal removal tool, remove the rear main seal from its mounting.

To install:

  1. Coat the oil seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Using the rear main seal installation tool, install the new rear main seal to its mounting.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.
