Timing Belt, Cover, Sprockets, & Seal

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engines
  1. Remove the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plugs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the catalytic converter.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt, nut, and position the coolant tube aside.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right wheel and tire assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right lower splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the crankshaft to just before top dead center (TDC) (No. 1 cylinder).
  14.  
  15. Remove the stud.
  16.  
  17. Install the special tool.
  18.  


NOTE
Make sure the correct (second) notch in the pulley is indexed to the lower cylinder block.

  1. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the peg to bring it to TDC (No. 1 cylinder).
  2.  
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts and the lower timing belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the special tool 303-F072.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ground strap.
  16.  
  17. Remove the engine mount upper bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the studs.
  20.  
  21. Remove the knock sensor connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts and the upper timing belt cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the water pump pulley.
  26.  
  27. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
  28.  


NOTE
Installation of the alignment tool into the exhaust camshaft may require the camshafts to be rotated clockwise slightly.

  1. Install the special tool and align the camshafts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts and the engine mount lower bracket.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley and allow to slide down to the bottom of its travel.
  8.  


CAUTION
If the camshaft timing belt is to be reused, mark the direction of the camshaft timing belt to rotation of camshaft prior to removal or premature wear or failure may occur.

  1. Slide the timing belt off of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. the timing belt for wear. Install a new belt if necessary.
  2.  

To install:


NOTE
Make sure the correct (second) notch in the pulley is indexed to the lower cylinder block.

  1. Slide the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft and confirm the crankshaft position is at TDC (No. 1 cylinder) by rotating it clockwise against the alignment peg.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Confirm that the timing belt tensioner is installed correctly with the tab positioned in the slot in the inner timing cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt onto the timing belt sprockets.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the timing belt tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Using a 6 mm Allen wrench, rotate the adjuster counterclockwise and align the marks as shown.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt.
  16.  
  17. Raise the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install the front engine mount lower bracket.
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
  22.  
  23. Install the water pump pulley.
  24.  
  25. Hand tighten the bolts.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Install the timing belt covers. Torque the cover bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7Nm).
  30.  
  31. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the special tool.
  34.  
  35. Install the stud. Torque to 25 ft. lbs. (34Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the coolant tube.
  38.  
  39. Install the catalytic converter.
  40.  
  41. Remove the special tool.
  42.  
  43. Install the valve cover.
  44.  
  45. Install the spark plugs.
  46.
