Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Strut and spring assembly and mount the strut assembly in a holding fixture and compress the coil spring using a suitable tool
     
    Strut piston rod nut
     

  4.  
  5. Coil spring by disassembling the strut in the following sequence:
    1. Step 1: Metal sheet plate.
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Upper strut mount.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Thrust bearing plate.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Thrust bearing.
    8.  
    9. Step 5: Upper spring seat.
    10.  
    11. Step 6: Upper spring seat isolator.
    12.  
    13. Step 7: Coil spring.
    14.  
    15. Step 8: Dust boot.
    16.  
    17. Step 9: Rubber bump stopper.
    18.  
    19. Step 10: Lower spring seat.
    20.

To install:



Assemble the strut assembly in the reverse order of the removal procedure
 

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut piston rod nut. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm) and remove the assembly from the holding fixture
     
    Strut and spring assembly
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Brake hose grommet from the bracket
     
    Antilock Brake System (ABS) harness from the strut assembly and move the brake hose bracket aside
     
    Stabilizer bar link nut and move the bar aside
     
    Strut to steering knuckle bolts and support the strut assembly
     
    Upper strut nuts
     
    Strut and coil spring assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut and spring assembly. Torque the upper nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Lower strut assembly to the steering knuckle. Torque the lower bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar into position. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Brake hose bracket. Torque the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    ABS harness to the strut assembly, if equipped
     
    Brake hose grommet to the bracket
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Brake hose grommet from the bracket
     
    Antilock Brake System (ABS) harness from the strut assembly and move the brake hose bracket aside
     
    Stabilizer bar link nut and move the bar aside
     
    Strut to steering knuckle bolts and support the strut assembly
     
    Upper strut nuts
     
    Strut and coil spring assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut and spring assembly. Torque the upper nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Lower strut assembly to the steering knuckle. Torque the lower bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar into position. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Brake hose bracket. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    ABS harness to the strut assembly, if equipped
     
    Brake hose grommet to the bracket
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Brake hose grommet from the bracket
     
    Antilock Brake System (ABS) harness from the strut assembly and move the brake hose bracket aside
     
    Stabilizer bar link nut and move the bar aside
     
    Strut to steering knuckle bolts and support the strut assembly
     
    Upper strut nuts
     
    Strut and coil spring assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut and spring assembly. Torque the upper nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Lower strut assembly to the steering knuckle. Torque the lower bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar into position. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Brake hose bracket. Torque the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    ABS harness to the strut assembly, if equipped
     
    Brake hose grommet to the bracket
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable

NOTE
Make sure the steering wheel is in the unlocked position.


NOTE
Use the hex holding feature to prevent the ball studs from turning while removing or installing the stabilizer bar link nuts.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake jounce hose clip.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake jounce hose. Pull the brake jounce hose downward slightly to remove the hose from the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ABS sensor harness bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar link nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut-to-knuckle nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the strut-to-knuckle bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the strut upper bushing nuts. Reference mark the strut mounting plate nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the strut and spring assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not allow the axle shaft to move outboard. Over-extension of the tripod CV joint can result in separation of internal parts, causing failure of the axle shaft.

  18.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Align the strut mounting plate nuts to the reference marks.
  4.  
  5. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
