    Wheel Bearings

    Removal & Installation



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Front wheel
       
      Brake disc
       
      Wheel hub nut
       
      Tie rod end cotter pin and nut
       
      Tie rod end from the knuckle
       
      Antilock Brake System (ABS) sensor bolt and move the sensor aside, if equipped
       
      Lower ball joint from the knuckle
       
      Halfshaft from the knuckle and properly support the halfshaft
       
      Steering knuckle
       

    4.  
    5. Press the hub from the wheel bearing and knuckle
    6.  
    7. Press the inner wheel bearing race from the knuckle and remove the snapring
    8.  


    NOTE
    The above step will not be necessary if the inner race remains with the knuckle.

    1. Press the outer wheel bearing race from the knuckle
    2.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Wheel bearing into the steering knuckle
       
      Snapring
       
      Wheel hub into the wheel bearing by using a press
       
      Steering knuckle. Torque the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
       
      Halfshaft into the wheel hub
       
      Pinch bolt to knuckle. Torque the nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
       
      Ball joint stud into the knuckle
       
      ABS sensor. Torque the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm), if equipped
       
      Tie rod end to the knuckle. Torque the nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
       
      New cotter pin to the tie rod end nut
       
      Wheel hub. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
       
      Brake disc
       
      Front wheel
       
      Negative battery cable

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

    3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    4.  
    5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
      NOTE
      If removing the wheel hub, the wheel bearing must be replaced.

    6.  
    7. Remove the wheel knuckle.

    9. Using the special tool, press the wheel hub from the wheel bearing.
      NOTE
      This step may not be necessary if the inner wheel bearing race remains in the wheel knuckle after removing the wheel hub.

    10.  
    11. Using the special tool, press the inner wheel bearing race from the wheel hub.

    13. Remove the snapring.

    15. Using the special tools, press the outer wheel bearing race from the wheel knuckle.
    16.  

    To install:

    1. Position the wheel knuckle in a vise.
      NOTE
      Special Tool 205-278 is not seen in place. It is located behind the wheel knuckle.

    3. Using the special tools, install the wheel bearing into the wheel knuckle.
    4.  
    5. Install the snapring.
    6.  
    7. Using the special tool, press the wheel hub into the wheel bearing.

    9. Install the knuckle.
