  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driver air bag module.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two front door scuff plates.
  8.  
  9. Remove the four pin-type retainers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two front door scuff plates.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two pin-type retainers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the electrical connectors located by the LH cowl.
  20.  
  21. Position the hood latch release handle aside.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts.
  24.  
  25. Position the hood latch release handle aside.
  26.  
  27. Remove the utility compartment.
  28.  
  29. Remove the four pin-type retainers.
  30.  
  31. Remove the utility compartment.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  34.  
  35. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
  36.  
  37. Release the upper clips and rotate the cover outward to release the lower pivot retainers.
  38.  
  39. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  40.  
  41. Remove the screws.
  42.  
  43. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  44.  
  45. If equipped, disconnect the shift cable.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the shift cable.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect the shift cable from the retaining bracket.
  50.  
  51. Remove the steering column coupler access cover.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the steering column coupler.
  54.  
  55. Remove the steering column coupler bolt and nut.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the steering column coupler.
  58.  
  59. Remove the cover panel.
  60.  
  61. Remove the pin-type retainer.
  62.  
  63. Release the retaining clip.
  64.  
  65. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  66.  
  67. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  68.  
  69. Disconnect the in-line electrical connector.
  70.  
  71. Remove the four instrument panel center brace bolts.
  72.  
  73. Remove the passenger air bag module.
  74.  
  75. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector.
  76.  
  77. Disconnect the temperature control cable.
  78.  
  79. Position the locator pin.
  80.  
  81. Release the locking tab.
  82.  
  83. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the blend door shaft.
  84.  
  85. Close the glove compartment.
  86.  
  87. Press the release tabs inward while raising the glove compartment.
  88.  
  89. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the blower motor.
  90.  
  91. Disconnect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  92.  
  93. Open the four A-pillar passenger assist handle covers.
  94.  
  95. Remove the two A-pillar passenger assist handles.
  96.  
  97. Remove the four bolts.
  98.  
  99. Remove the two A-pillar passenger assist handles.
  100.  
  101. Remove the two windshield side garnish moldings.
  102.  
  103. Remove the instrument panel cowl top cover.
  104.  
  105. Remove the instrument panel cowl top bolt.
  106.  
  107. Loosen the tilt lever (if equipped) and lower steering column.
  108.  
  109. Position the transmission range selector lever (if equipped) down to provide access to the instrument cluster finish panel and instrument cluster.
  110.  
  111. Remove the screws and the instrument cluster finish panel.
  112.  
  113. Remove the screws.
  114.  
  115. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the instrument cluster.
  116.  
  117. Through the instrument cluster opening, remove the instrument panel nut.
  118.  
  119. Remove the two instrument panel finish end panels.
  120.  
  121. Remove the four instrument panel cowl side bolts.
  122.  


NOTE
This step requires an assistant.

  1. Remove the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater blending door levers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screw for heater blending door.
  6.  
  7. Remove the levers for the blending door.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heater core.
  10.  
  11. Remove the three screws.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cover for the heater core and pull the heater core out of the housing.
  14.  


NOTE
Before installing the temperature control cable, make sure the blend door, cable and temperature switch are correctly positioned.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2.  


CAUTION
Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.


CAUTION
Once the new module is installed, it is necessary to download the module configuration information from the scan tool into the new instrument cluster.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driver air bag module.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two front door scuff plates.
  12.  
  13. Remove the four pin-type retainers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two front door scuff plates.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two pin-type retainers.
  20.  
  21. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the electrical connectors located by the LH cowl.
  24.  
  25. Position the hood latch release handle aside.
  26.  
  27. Remove the bolts.
  28.  
  29. Position the hood latch release handle aside.
  30.  
  31. Remove the utility compartment.
  32.  
  33. Remove the four pin-type retainers.
  34.  
  35. Remove the utility compartment.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  38.  
  39. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
  40.

  65. Remove the pin-type retainer.

  67. Release the retaining clip.
  68.  
  69. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  72.  
  73. Disconnect the in-line electrical connector.

  75. Remove the four instrument panel center brace bolts.
  76.  
  77. Remove the passenger air bag module.

  79. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector.

  81. Disconnect the temperature control cable.

  127. Remove the instrument panel.

  133. Remove the levers for the blending door.

  135. Remove the heater core.

  137. Remove the three screws.

  139. Remove the cover for the heater core and pull the heater core out of the housing.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. De-power the supplemental restraint system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  7. Drain the engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Release the 2 clamps and disconnect the 2 heater hoses from the heater core.
  10.  
  11. Position the seats forward and remove the 2 rear bolts.
  12.  
  13. Position the seats rearward and disconnect the battery.
  14.  
  15. Position the parking brake handle to the full-up position.
  16.  
  17. Remove the transaxle selector lever bezel.
  18.  
  19. Release the parking brake handle boot from the floor console finish panel.
  20.  
  21. If equipped, remove the floor console top panel.
    NOTE
    If removing the floor console storage bin, squeeze the front and rear of the storage bin to release the retaining tabs from the floor console finish panel.

  23. Remove the floor console finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  24.  
  25. Remove the 6 bolts and remove the floor console.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 4 pin-type retainers and the 2 front door scuff plates.
  28.  
  29. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the 2 A-pillar lower trim panels.
  30.  
  31. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover.
  32.  
  33. Remove the left and right instrument panel end trim panels.
  34.  
  35. Lower the tilt steering column to the lowest position.
  36.  
  37. Remove the 2 screws and the instrument cluster finish panel.
  38.  
  39. Remove the 4 instrument cluster screws and the instrument cluster. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the main electrical connector.
  42.  
  43. Remove the ground wire bolt and position the ground wire aside.
  44.  
  45. Remove the 2 bolts and position the hood release handle aside.
  46.  
  47. Remove the steering column coupler access cover.
  48.  
  49. Remove the steering column pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
  50.  
  51. Remove the cover panel pin-type retainer and the cover panel. Release the retaining clip from the instrument panel center brace.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  54.  
  55. Disconnect the restraint control module (RCM) electrical connector.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the blend door shaft.
    1. Align the locator holes.
    2.  
    3. Release the locking tab.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the temperature control cable.
    6.

  59. Remove the 4 transaxle selector lever bolts and position the transaxle selector lever aside. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  60.  
  61. Remove the bolts and position the parking brake control aside Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  62.  
  63. Open the glove compartment. Press the release tabs inward while lowering the glove compartment.
  64.  
  65. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connectors.
  66.  
  67. Disconnect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  68.  
  69. Remove the cover and the instrument panel cowl top bolt.
  70.  
  71. Remove the 4 instrument panel center brace bolts.
  72.  
  73. Remove the instrument panel cluster opening nut through the instrument cluster opening.
  74.  
  75. Remove the 4 instrument panel cowl side bolts.
    NOTE
    This step requires an assistant.

  77. Remove the instrument panel.
  78.  
  79. Remove the screw and the temperature blend door lever.
  80.  
  81. Remove the 3 screws and the heater core cover.
  82.  
  83. Remove the heater core from the housing.
    NOTE
    Make sure the temperature blend door actuator and switch are in the correct position when installing the temperature blend door lever.


    NOTE
    Lubricate the coolant hoses with plain water only, if needed.

  85. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Observe the following torques:

    the 4 instrument panel cowl side bolts: 9 Nm (80 lb-in)
     
    the instrument panel cluster opening nut: 9 Nm (80 lb-in)
     
    The 4 instrument panel center brace bolts: 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
     
    The instrument panel cowl top bolt: 6 Nm (53 lb-in)
     
    The parking brake control: 24 Nm (18 lb-ft)
     
    The 4 transaxle selector lever bolts: 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) for automatic transaxle; 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) for manual transaxle
     
    The steering column pinch bolt: 23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
     
    The hood release handle: 6 Nm (53 lb-in)

  87. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.

  89. If equipped with automatic transaxle, adjust the linkage.
  90.  
  91. Repower the supplemental restraint system.

  93. Following installation of the new instrument cluster, download the module configuration information from the diagnostic tool into the new module as follows:

Using the Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) When the Original Body Chassis Electrical Module is Not Available

  1. Install the new module.
  2.  
  3. Using the VCM and the latest version of the service function card, SELECT: Programmable Module Installation.
  4.  
  5. Select the module being installed.
  6.  
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8.  
  9. SELECT: Retrieve Module Configuration-Old ECU and press trigger.
  10.  
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  12.  
  13. The VCM attempts to retrieve the module data from the powertrain control module (PCM). If the module data is available, go to Step A. If the VCM displays: Call As-Built Data Center, go to Step B.
  14.  

Step A

  1. SELECT: Restore Configuration-New ECU. Press trigger.
  2.  
  3. The VCM completes loading the retrieved data and displays Module Download Successful.
  4.  
  5. Test the module for correct operation.
  6.  

Step B

  1. Press the trigger.
  2.  
  3. If the VCM asks for vehicle data, enter the vehicle data, then press store.
  4.  
  5. The VCM asks for module data line 1. Enter the data and press store.
  6.  
  7. The VCM then asks if there is an additional line of data available for that address. Select YES or NO depending on the information in the As Built Data Sheet.
  8.  
  9. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the answer is NO for Step 4.
  10.  
  11. The VCM should show a screen stating that the module data was stored. Press the trigger.
  12.  
  13. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  14.  
  15. SELECT: Restore Configuration-New ECU. Press the trigger.
  16.  
  17. The VCM completes loading the retrieved data and displays Module Download Successful.
  18.  
  19. Test the module for correct operation.  
  20.  

Using the Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) When the Original Body Chassis Electrical Module is Available

  1. With the original module still installed, using the VCM and the latest version of the service function card, SELECT: Programmable Module Installation.
  2.  
  3. Select the module being installed and press the trigger.
  4.  
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6.  
  7. SELECT: Retrieve Module Configuration-Old ECU. Press the trigger.
  8.  
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  10.  
  11. INSTALL new module, SELECT: Restore Configuration-New ECU. Press the trigger.
  12.  
  13. The VCM completes loading the retrieved data and displays Module Download Successful.
  14.  
  15. Test the module for correct operation.  
  16.  

Using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) When the Original Body Chassis Electrical Module is Not Available

  1. Install the new module.
  2.  
  3. Connect the WDS and ID the vehicle as normal.
  4.  
  5. From the Toolbox icon, select and highlight Module Programming. Then highlight the module that was installed and press the check mark.
  6.  
  7. Select and highlight Programmable Module Installation. Then highlight the module that was installed and press the check mark.
  8.  
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions, turn the ignition key to the OFF position and press the check mark.
  10.  
  11. The WDS retrieves the module data from the PCM, automatically downloads the data into the new module, and displays Module Configuration Complete.
  12.  
  13. If the data is not available in the PCM, the WDS displays a screen stating to contact the As-Built Data Center. Retrieve the data from WWW.FMCDEALER.COM at this time and press the check mark.
  14.  
  15. Enter the module data (the module address and line are displayed to the left of the 3 entry boxes) and press the check mark.
  16.  
  17. The WDS downloads the data into the new module and displays Operation Successful-Programming Complete.
  18.  
  19. Test the module for correct operation.  
  20.  

Using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) When the Original Body Chassis Electrical Module is Available

  1. Connect the WDS and ID the vehicle as normal.
  2.  
  3. From the Toolbox icon, select and highlight Module Programming and press the check mark.
  4.  
  5. Select and highlight Programmable Module Installation.
  6.  
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions, turn the ignition key to the OFF position, and press the check mark.
  8.  
  9. Install the new module and press the check mark.
  10.  
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions, turn the ignition key to the ON position, and press the check mark.
  12.  
  13. The module configuration is complete.
  14.  
  15. Test the module for correct operation.
