Removal & Installation
2001-2004
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two front door scuff plates.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four pin-type retainers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two front door scuff plates.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two pin-type retainers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two A-pillar lower trim panels.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the electrical connectors located by the LH cowl.
  18.  
  19. Position the hood latch release handle aside.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts.
  22.  
  23. Position the hood latch release handle aside.
  24.  
  25. Remove the utility compartment.
  26.  
  27. Remove the four pin-type retainers.
  28.  
  29. Remove the utility compartment.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  32.  
  33. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
  34.  
  35. Release the upper clips and rotate the cover outward to release the lower pivot retainers.
  36.  
  37. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  38.  
  39. Remove the screws.
  40.  
  41. Remove the steering column lower cover.
  42.  
  43. If equipped, disconnect the shift cable.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the shift cable.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the shift cable from the retaining bracket.
  48.  
  49. Remove the steering column coupler access cover.
  50.  
  51. Disconnect the steering column coupler.
  52.  
  53. Remove the steering column coupler bolt and nut.
  54.  
  55. Disconnect the steering column coupler.
  56.  
  57. Remove the cover panel.
  58.  
  59. Remove the pin-type retainer.
  60.  
  61. Release the retaining clip.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  64.  
  65. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  66.  
  67. Disconnect the in-line electrical connector.
  68.  
  69. Remove the four instrument panel center brace bolts.
  70.  
  71. Remove the passenger air bag module.
  72.  
  73. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector.
  74.  
  75. Disconnect the temperature control cable.
  76.  
  77. Position the locator pin.
  78.  
  79. Release the locking tab.
  80.  
  81. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the blend door shaft.
  82.  
  83. Close the glove compartment.
  84.  
  85. Press the release tabs inward while raising the glove compartment.
  86.  
  87. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the blower motor.
  88.  
  89. Disconnect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  90.  
  91. Open the four A-pillar passenger assist handle covers.
  92.  
  93. Remove the two A-pillar passenger assist handles.
  94.  
  95. Remove the four bolts.
  96.  
  97. Remove the two A-pillar passenger assist handles.
  98.  
  99. Remove the two windshield side garnish moldings.
  100.  
  101. Remove the instrument panel cowl top cover.
  102.  
  103. Remove the instrument panel cowl top bolt.
  104.  
  105. Loosen the tilt lever (if equipped) and lower steering column.
  106.  
  107. Position the transaxle range selector lever (if equipped) down to provide access to the instrument cluster finish panel and instrument cluster.
  108.  
  109. Remove the screws and the instrument cluster finish panel.
  110.  
  111. Remove the screws.
  112.  
  113. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the instrument cluster.
  114.  
  115. Through the instrument cluster opening, remove the instrument panel nut.
  116.  
  117. Remove the two instrument panel finish end panels.
  118.  
  119. Remove the four instrument panel cowl side bolts.
    NOTE
    This step requires an assistant.

  121. Remove the instrument panel.
  122.  
  123. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    CAUTION
    Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.


    CAUTION
    Once the new module is installed, it is necessary to download the module configuration information from the scan tool into the new instrument cluster.

2005-2006
  1. Position the seats forward and remove the 2 rear bolts.
  2.  
  3. Position the seats rearward and disconnect the battery.
  4.  
  5. Position the parking brake handle to the full-up position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transaxle selector lever bezel.
  8.  
  9. Release the parking brake handle boot from the floor console finish panel.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the floor console top panel.
    NOTE
    If removing the floor console storage bin, squeeze the front and rear of the storage bin to release the retaining tabs from the floor console finish panel.

  13. Remove the floor console finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 6 bolts and remove the floor console.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 4 pin-type retainers and the 2 front door scuff plates.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the 2 A-pillar lower trim panels.
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the left and right instrument panel end trim panels.
  24.  
  25. Lower the tilt steering column to the lowest position.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 2 screws and the instrument cluster finish panel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the 4 instrument cluster screws and the instrument cluster. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the main electrical connector.
  32.  
  33. Remove the ground wire bolt and position the ground wire aside.
  34.  
  35. Remove the 2 bolts and position the hood release handle aside.
  36.  
  37. Remove the steering column coupler access cover.
  38.  
  39. Remove the steering column pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
  40.  
  41. Remove the cover panel pin-type retainer and the cover panel. Release the retaining clip from the instrument panel center brace.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the restraint control module (RCM) electrical connector.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the blend door shaft.
    1. Align the locator holes.
    2.  
    3. Release the locking tab.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the temperature control cable.
    6.

  49. Remove the 4 transaxle selector lever bolts and position the transaxle selector lever aside. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  50.  
  51. Remove the bolts and position the parking brake control aside Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  52.  
  53. Open the glove compartment. Press the release tabs inward while lowering the glove compartment.
  54.  
  55. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connectors.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the antenna cable in-line connector.
  58.  
  59. Remove the cover and the instrument panel cowl top bolt.
  60.  
  61. Remove the 4 instrument panel center brace bolts.
  62.  
  63. Remove the instrument panel cluster opening nut through the instrument cluster opening.
  64.  
  65. Remove the 4 instrument panel cowl side bolts.
    NOTE
    This step requires an assistant.

  67. Remove the instrument panel.
  68.  
  69. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Observe the following torques:

    the 4 instrument panel cowl side bolts: 9 Nm (80 lb-in)
     
    the instrument panel cluster opening nut: 9 Nm (80 lb-in)
     
    The 4 instrument panel center brace bolts: 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
     
    The instrument panel cowl top bolt: 6 Nm (53 lb-in)
     
    The parking brake control: 24 Nm (18 lb-ft)
     
    The 4 transaxle selector lever bolts: 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) for automatic transaxle; 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) for manual transaxle
     
    The steering column pinch bolt: 23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
     
    The hood release handle: 6 Nm (53 lb-in)
