CV-Joints



Overhaul
Front Halfshaft
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front halfshaft.
  4.  
  5. Position the halfshaft in a soft-jawed vise.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inboard halfshaft boot clamp.
  8.  
  9. Remove the boot from the inboard CV-joint housing.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tripod joint from the CV-joint housing and matchmark the tripod joint to the halfshaft
     
    Snapring and boot from the halfshaft
     
    Outboard halfshaft boot clamps
     
    Outboard boot back to expose the CV-joint and matchmark the joint to the halfshaft
     
    Outboard CV-joint from the halfshaft

To install:

  1. Lubricate the outer CV-joint with grease.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Outboard CV-joint and boot
     
    New halfshaft bearing circlip
     
    Inboard CV-joint to the halfshaft
     
    Outboard halfshaft boot forward on to the outboard CV-joint

Rear Halfshaft
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the halfshaft.
  4.  
  5. Secure the halfshaft in a vise using protective jaw covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 inner halfshaft boot clamps.
  8.  
  9. Slide the inner halfshaft boot off the inner CV-joint housing.
  10.  
  11. If reinstalling the original inner joint, mark the inner CV-joint and the halfshaft to be sure of correct installation.
  12.  
  13. Using a soft face hammer, separate the halfshaft from the inner joint housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the bearing retainer circlip.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the snap ring.
  18.  
  19. Remove the inner halfshaft boot from the halfshaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 outer halfshaft boot clamps.
  22.  
  23. Slide the outer halfshaft joint boot back out of the way exposing the outer CV-joint.
  24.  
  25. If reinstalling the original inner CV-joint, mark the outer CV-joint and the halfshaft to be sure of correct installation.
  26.  
  27. Using a soft-face hammer, separate the outer CV-joint by gently tapping it off the halfshaft.
  28.  
  29. Remove and discard the bearing retainer circlip.
  30.  
  31. Remove the snap ring from the halfshaft.
  32.  
  33. Slide the outer halfshaft boot off the halfshaft.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the inner and outer CV-joints with joint grease.
  2.  
  3. Install the outer halfshaft boot.
  4.  
  5. Install the snap ring on the halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install a new halfshaft bearing retainer circlip.
  8.  
  9. Using a soft-face hammer, install the inner CV-joint by gently tapping it onto the halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove any excess grease on the mating surfaces and slide the outer halfshaft joint boot forward onto the outer CV-joint.
  12.  
  13. Remove any excess air trapped in the outer halfshaft boot using a cloth-covered screwdriver after adjusting the outer halfshaft boot spacing.
  14.  
  15. Using a crimping tool, install 2 new outer halfshaft boot clamps.
  16.  
  17. Position the inner halfshaft boot.
  18.  
  19. Install the snap ring.
  20.  
  21. Install the bearing retainer circlip.
  22.  
  23. Using a soft face hammer, install the halfshaft on the inner CV-joint.
  24.  
  25. Position the inner halfshaft boot.
  26.  
  27. Remove any excess air trapped in the inner halfshaft boot using a cloth-covered screwdriver after adjusting the inner halfshaft boot spacing.
  28.  
  29. Using a crimping tool, install 2 new inner CV-joint boot clamps.
  30.  
  31. Install the halfshaft.
  32.

Front Halfshaft

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.

  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel and tire assembly
     
    Front brake disc
     
    Front axle wheel hub nut and discard the nut
     
    Tie rod end and separate the lower ball from the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshaft from the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshaft
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. When seated properly, the halfshaft bearing retainer circlip will snap into the differential side gear groove.
  2.  
  3. Position the halfshaft and joint so that the splines align with differential side gear splines. Push the halfshaft into side gear.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into the steering knuckle
     
    Lower ball joint to steering knuckle. Torque the pinch bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end. Torque the nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    New front axle wheel hub nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm) on 2001-2005 vehicles and to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm) on 2006 vehicles.
     
    Front brake disc
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Check the fluid level and adjust as needed.
  8.  

Rear Halfshaft

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    WARNING
    Do not loosen the rear axle wheel hub retainer until after the wheel and tire assembly are removed from the vehicle. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is unloaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.

  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear brake drum or brake disc.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear coil spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear axle wheel hub nut.
  14.  
  15. Using tool 205-D070 separate the halfshaft from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    Do not use a hammer to separate the rear axle halfshaft assembly from the hub. Damage to the threads and the internal CV joint can result.

  17. Properly support the rear knuckle, with the proper support equipment. Remove the nut and separate the lower ball joints.
  18.  
  19. Using tool 205-241, remove the halfshaft.
  20.  
  21. Using tools 307-309 and 100-001 remove the stub and shaft seal. Using tools 308-125 and 100-001 remove the stub shaft pilot bearing seal.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    NOTE
    Lubricate the new stub shaft pilot bearing housing seal with grease.

  2.  
  3. Using the special tools, install the stub shaft pilot bearing housing seal.
  4.  
  5. Install a new circlip on the inboard CV joint.
  6.  
  7. Install the halfshaft end into the hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. Observe the following torques:

    Lower ball joint: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft nut: 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
