Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  5. Remove the rear transaxle insulator bolts and nuts
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear transaxle insulator.

  9. On vehicles with automatic transaxle; remove the bolts and the rear transaxle insulator bracket.

  11. On all vehicles, remove the power steering pressure and return line bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front wheels.

  15. On vehicles with manual transaxle; remove the bolts and the rear transaxle insulator bracket.
  16.  
  17. On all vehicles, remove the tie rod end cotter pin and nut.
  18.  
  19. Using the special tool 211-105, separate the tie rod end from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    Record the number of turns required to remove the tie rod end.

  21. Remove the tie rod ends and the tie rod end jam nuts.

  23. Slide the steering gear coupling boot up and remove the steering gear coupling pinch bolt.
    NOTE
    Drain the excess power steering fluid into a suitable drain pan.


    NOTE
    Do not drop the O-ring seals.

  25. Remove the bolt and power steering pressure and return lines.

  27. Lower the vehicle on the hoist.

  29. Remove the steering shaft.

  31. Remove the steering shaft nuts and boot.

  33. Remove the two steering gear mounting bolts.
  34.  
  35. Raise the vehicle on the hoist.
    NOTE
    With the mounting bolts removed, slide the gear forward to separate the steering coupling from the steering gear shaft.

  37. Remove the steering gear.

To install:


NOTE
With the mounting bolts removed, slide the gear rearward to connect the steering coupling to the steering gear shaft.

  1. Position the steering gear in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Lower the hoist.
  4.  
  5. Install the two steering gear mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering shaft boot.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the power steering pressure and return line bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Raise the vehicle on the hoist.
    NOTE
    Make sure the O-ring seals are on the power steering pressure and return lines.

  14.  
  15. Connect the power steering pressure and return lines to the steering gear and install the bolt.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering gear coupling pinch bolt and slide the boot down.
  18.  
  19. Thread the tie rod end jam nuts onto the front wheel spindle tie rods.
    NOTE
    Use the numbers recorded from removal to install the tie rod ends.

  21. Thread the tie rod ends onto the front wheel spindle tie rods.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the tie rod end jam nuts.
  24.  
  25. Connect the tie rod end to the knuckle.
  26.  
  27. On vehicles with manual transaxle, install the rear transaxle insulator bracket and the bolts.
  28.  
  29. On all vehicles, install the front wheels.
  30.  
  31. On vehicles with automatic transaxle, install the rear transaxle insulator bracket and the bolts.
  32.  
  33. On all vehicles, fill, bleed and leak check the power steering system.
  34.  
  35. Torque all fasteners to correct specifications.
  36.  
  37. Align the front wheels to specifications.
