Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Drum brake vehicles:
    1. Remove the brake shoes.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate. Remove the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the brake line from the wheel cylinder and remove the brake line bracket bolt.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Disc brake vehicles, remove the parking brake shoes.
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the wheel hub nut.
    WARNING
    Do not use a hammer to separate the outer constant velocity (CV) joint from the hub.

  12.  
  13. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components can result.
  14.  
  15. With 4wd, separate the outer CV-joint from the wheel hub.
  16.  
  17. Remove the anti-lock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor bolt and the 2 ABS wheel speed sensor wire bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove and position the wheel speed sensor and harness aside.
  20.  
  21. Remove the coil spring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
    NOTE
    The joint surfaces must be clean. Clean the general area of the joint to prevent debris from entering the joint. Clean using only mild liquids.

  25. Reference mark the notch on the cam nut adjustment cam.
  26.  
  27. Remove and discard the wheel knuckle bolt.
  28.  
  29. Remove and discard the cam nut.
  30.  
  31. Remove the wheel knuckle.
  32.  

To install:


WARNING
The joint area must be free of debris to ensure correct clamping.


NOTE
The joint surfaces and the bushing sleeve serrations must be clean before assembly.

  1. Clean the joint surfaces and the bushing sleeve serrations with a wire brush.
    NOTE
    Align the notch on the cam nut with the reference marks.

  2.  
  3. Position the wheel knuckle and install a new wheel knuckle bolt and cam nut.
  4.  
  5. Using a suitable tool, hold the cam nut stationary while tightening the wheel knuckle bolt. Tighten to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Position the ABS wheel speed sensor harness and the sensor.
  8.  
  9. Position the lower ball joint into the wheel knuckle and install the lower ball joint nut. Tighten to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install the coil spring.
  12.  
  13. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor bolt and the 2 ABS wheel speed sensor wire bolts. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
  14.  
  15. With 4wd, install the outer CV joint into the wheel hub.
  16.  
  17. Install a new wheel hub nut. Tighten to 290 Nm (214 ft. lbs.).
  18.  
  19. Install the brake shoes.
  20.  
  21. Connect the brake line to the wheel cylinder. Tighten to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
  22.  
  23. Install the brake line bracket bolt. Tighten to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
  24.  
  25. Connect the parking brake cable to the brake backing plate and install the parking brake cable bracket bolt. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
  26.  
  27. Install the parking brake shoes.
  28.  
  29. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary.
  30.  

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    When a new wheel knuckle is installed a new wheel bearing must also be installed.

  6.  
  7. Remove the brake shoes.
    NOTE
    If equipped, remove ABS sensor ring.

  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel hub nut.

  11. Remove the wheel hub.
    NOTE
    This step may not be necessary if the inner wheel bearing race remains in the wheel knuckle, after removing the wheel hub.

  13. Press the inner wheel bearing race from the wheel hub.

  15. Remove the snapring.
  16.  
  17. Vehicles with ABS: Remove the ABS sensor bolt and bracket bolts. Position the ABS sensor aside.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate. Remove the parking brake cable bolt from the wheel knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the brake line from the wheel cylinder. Remove the brake line bracket bolt.
  22.  
  23. Support the wheel knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower shock absorber nut.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.

  27. Remove the nut. Separate the lower ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.

  28.  
  29. Remove the nut. Separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    NOTE
    Note the position of the spring insulator and spring for installation.

  31. Remove the spring. Lower the support to the wheel knuckle.

  33. Mark the position of the adjustment cam notch.

  35. Remove the wheel knuckle cam bolt and nut.
  36.  
  37. Remove the wheel knuckle cam.
  38.  
  39. Remove the wheel knuckle.

  41. Remove the brake backing plate from the rear wheel knuckle.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Install a new wheel bearing into the wheel knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the snapring into the wheel knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Position the brake backing plate to the wheel knuckle and install the bolts. Torque to 49 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).

  7. Using the wheel hub washer and the special tool, install the wheel hub into the wheel bearing.
    NOTE
    If equipped, install the ABS sensor ring.

  9. Install the wheel hub nut. Torque to 214 ft. lbs. (290Nm).
  10.  
  11. Position the wheel knuckle and install the wheel knuckle cam.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel knuckle cam bolt and nut loosely.
  14.  
  15. Support the wheel knuckle and install the spring.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower shock absorber nut. Torque to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Position the upper ball joint and install the nut. Torque to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Position the lower ball joint and install the nut. Torque to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt and nut.
    1. Align the wheel knuckle cam.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt and nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    4.

  25. Connect the brake line to the wheel cylinder. Install the brake line bracket bolt. Torque the brake line-to-wheel cylinder to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm). Torque the 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  27. Install the parking brake cable through the brake backing plate. Torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Vehicles with ABS: Position the ABS sensor and bracket bolts. Install the bolts. Torque to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the brake shoes.
  32.  
  33. Bleed the brake system.
  34.  
  35. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary.
  36.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    When a new wheel knuckle is installed a new wheel bearing must also be installed.


    WARNING
    Use of a brake drum puller or a torch is not recommended. Brake drum distortion can occur.


    NOTE
    If the brake drum is rusted to the axle shaft pilot diameter, tap the center of the brake drum between the wheel studs.

  7. Remove the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. If the brake drum will not come off, follow these steps.
    1. Move the brake shoe adjusting lever off the brake adjuster screw.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the brake shoe adjuster screw nut by adjusting the nut upward.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the rear halfshaft nut.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the halfshaft from the wheel hub.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wheel hub.
    NOTE
    This step may not be necessary if the inner wheel bearing race remains in the wheel knuckle, after removing the wheel hub.

  17. Press the inner wheel bearing race from the wheel hub.
  18.  
  19. Remove the snapring.
  20.  
  21. Vehicles with ABS: Remove the ABS sensor bolt and bracket bolts. Position the ABS sensor aside.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the parking brake cable. Remove the parking brake cable bolt from the wheel knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove brake line bracket bolt.
  26.  
  27. Support the wheel knuckle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the lower shock absorber nut.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.

  31. Disconnect the lower ball joint.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.

  33. Disconnect the upper ball joint.
    NOTE
    Note the position of the spring insulator and spring for installation.

  35. Remove the spring. Lower the support to the wheel knuckle.
  36.  
  37. Mark the position of the adjustment cam notch.
  38.  
  39. Remove the wheel knuckle cam bolt and nut.
  40.  
  41. Remove the wheel knuckle cam.
  42.  
  43. Remove the wheel knuckle.
  44.  
  45. Remove the brake backing plate from the wheel knuckle.
  46.  

To install:

  1. Using the special tools, install a new wheel bearing into the wheel knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the snapring into the wheel knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Position the wheel knuckle and install the wheel knuckle cam.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel knuckle cam bolt loosely.
    NOTE
    Brake shoes shown removed for clarity.

  9. Install the brake backing plate into the wheel knuckle. Install the bolts. Torque to 49 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel hub.
  12.  
  13. Position the halfshaft into the wheel hub.
  14.  
  15. Support the wheel knuckle and install the spring.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower shock absorber nut. Torque to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove the support from the wheel knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Install the upper ball joint. Install the nut. Torque to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the lower ball joint. Install the nut. Torque to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Align the wheel knuckle cam.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt and nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install brake line bracket bolt. Torque to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the parking brake cable bolt. Torque to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Vehicles with ABS: Position the ABS brake sensor and bracket bolts. Install the bolts. Torque to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the halfshaft end into the hub assembly.
  36.  
  37. Install the halfshaft nut. Torque to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the brake drum.
  40.  
  41. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  42.  
  43. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary.
  44.
