  1. Adjust the service brakes before attempting to adjust the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Use the adjusting nut to adjust the length of the front cable so that the rear brakes are locked when the parking brake lever is pulled out:

    1971-84: 5-10 notches
     
    1986: 11-13 notches
     

  4.  
  5. After adjustment, apply the parking brake several times. Release the parking brake and make sure that the rear wheels rotate without dragging. If they drag, repeat the adjustment.
  6.  

If the parking brake cable is replaced, prestretch it by applying the parking brake hard three or four times before attempting adjustment.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Front Cable

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the adjusting nut.
  4.  
  5. Separate the front cable from the equalizer and remove the jam nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the return spring and boot from the housing.
  8.  
  9. Pull the lower housing forward and out of the slotted frame bracket. Slip the cable shaft sideways through the slot until the cable and housing are free of the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disengage the cable connector from the brake lever by removing the clevis pin and retainer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper cable housing retaining clip and pull the cable and housing from the slotted bracket on the firewall.
  14.  
  15. Push the cable, cable housing and dust shield grommet through the firewall opening and into the engine compartment.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cable and housing.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  20.  

Rear Cables

  1. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pin and disconnect the equalizer from the clevis.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the right-hand cable from the left.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear brake shoes.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the cables from the brake shoe levers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cable housing retainer from the backing plate.
  12.  
  13. Pull the return spring to release the retainer plate from the end of the housing.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the cable housing-to-frame bracket locknut and remove the forward end of the cable housing from the frame bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cable housing retaining clip bolts.
  18.  
  19. Disengage the cable housing-to-frame tension springs and pull the cable out of the backing plate.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of removal.
