L4N71B
  1. Move the gearshift lever to the P range.
  2.
  3. Loosen the shift linkage locknuts.
  4.
  5. Be sure to shift the transmission to the P range by moving the select lever of the transmission.
  6.
  7. Using a feeler gauge, adjust the linkage until there is 0.039 in. (1mm) between the adjust lever and the locknut.
  8.
  9. Remove the feeler gauge and tighten jam nut to 69-95 inch lbs. (7.8-11.0 Nm).
  10.
  11. Move the gearshift lever to the N , D and P ranges and make sure there is clearance between the select lever bracket and the guide pin.
  12.
  13. If there is no clearance, readjust the lever..
  14.

N4A-HL
  1. Move the gearshift lever to the P range.
  2.
  3. Loosen linkage locknuts so they are both at least 0.039 in. (1mm) away from the adjustment lever.
  4.
  5. Shift the transmission to the P range by moving the manual shaft of the transmission.
  6.
  7. With the link at 90 degrees to the lever, adjust the clearance using a feeler gauge to 0.039 in. (1mm) between the adjustment lever and the locknut.
  8.
  9. Remove the feeler gauge and tighten the jam nut to 69-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  10.
  11. Measure the clearance between the guide plate and the guide pin in the P range. There should be 0.039 in. (1mm) clearance in front of the pin and 0.020 in. (0.5mm) clearance behind the pin.
  12.
  13. Move the gearshift lever to the N and D ranges and check that the clearance between the guide plate and guide pin is the same in both ranges. If not, readjust.
  14.

R4AX-EL

  10.
  11. Turn the locknut by hand until it just touches the spacer, then tighten the jam nut to 67-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  12.
  13. Check the lever so the clearance between the guide plate and the guide pin in the P range with the pushrod lightly depressed is as specified.
  14.
  15. Move the selector lever to the N and D ranges and make sure there is the same clearance between the guide plate and guide pin. If not, readjust the lever.
  16.
  17. Install the console. Clean and apply locking compound to the selector knob screw threads and tighten the screws to 13-26 inch lbs. (1.5-2.9 Nm).
  18.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.

  10.
  11. Adjust the clearance between the lower bracket and the shift lever bushing by turning the top lever until there is no clearance. Tighten the top lever mounting bolt, then retighten the remaining bolt to 12-17 ft. lbs. (16-23 Nm).
  12.
  13. Remove the pin from the gear shift rod assembly and install the column covers. Check selector lever operation.
  14.

Navajo

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle, as necessary. From inside the vehicle, place the column shift selector lever in the OD position. Hang an 8 lb. weight on the selector lever.
  2.
  3. From below the vehicle, pull down the lock tab on the shift cable and remove the fitting from the transmission manual control lever ball stud.
  4.
  5. Position the transmission manual control lever in the OD position by moving the lever all the way rearward and then moving it 3 detents forward.
  6.
  7. Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission manual control lever. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.
  8.
  9. Remove the 8 lb. weight from the column shift selector.
  10.
  11. After adjustment, check for P engagement. Check the column shift selector lever in all detent positions with the engine running to ensure correct adjustment.

KICK-DOWN SWITCH

1987-89 L3N71B
  1. Connect an ohmmeter across the terminals of the kick-down switch, depress the accelerator pedal fully and make sure that there is continuity. If not, proceed:
  2.
  3. Loosen the switch locknut.
  4.
  5. Depress the accelerator pedal fully and adjust the switch until continuity is observed.
  6.
  7. Tighten the locknut.
  8.

L4N71B

  1. Connect an ohmmeter across the 2 lower terminals of the kick-down switch. Make sure that there is continuity when the tip of the switch is depressed 6.0-6.5mm (0.236-0.256 in.). If not, proceed:
  2.

Fig. Fig. 5: View of the transmission kickdown cable assemble and its adjusting points

The kickdown cable is self-adjusting over a tolerance range of 1 in. (25mm). If the cable requires readjustment, reset the by depressing the semi-circular metal tab on the self-adjuster mechanism and pulling the cable forward (toward the front of the vehicle) to the "Zero'' position setting. The cable will then automatically readjust to the proper length when kicked down.

MANUAL LINKAGE

L3N71B
  1. Place the shift lever in P .
  2.
  3. Loosen the 3 locknuts on the linkage trunion.
  4.
  5. Move the transmission lever to the P range.
  6.
  7. Apply a forward force of about 20 lbs. to the shift handle and tighten the locknuts to 95 inch lbs.
  8.
  9. Move the shift handle to N , P , and D ranges. Make sure that there is clearance between the select lever bracket and guide pin. If there is no clearance, adjust the lever by adjusting the locknuts.
  10.

L4N71B

  1. Place the shift lever in P .
  2.
  3. Remove the shifter boot.
  4.
  5. Loosen the 2 locknuts on the cable at the base of the shifter.
  6.
  7. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  8.
  9. Move the transmission lever to the P range.
  10.
  11. Using a feeler gauge, turn the locknuts until there is 1mm (0.039 in.) clearance between the forward locknut and the adjust lever.
  12.
  13. Tighten the rear locknut.
  14.
  15. Move the shift handle to N , P , and D ranges. Make sure that there is clearance between the select lever bracket and guide pin. If there is no clearance, adjust the lever by adjusting the locknuts.
  16.

A4LD

Before the linkage is adjusted, be sure the engine idle speed and anti-stall dashpot are properly adjusted.

  1. Position the transmission selector control lever in D position and loosen the trunion bolt.
  2.

Make sure that the shift lever detent pawl is held against the rearward Drive detent stop during the linkage adjustment procedure.

  1. Position the transmission manual lever in the D position, by moving the bellcrank lever all the way rearward, then forward 3 detents.
  2.
  3. With the transmission selector lever/manual lever in the D position, apply light forward pressure to the shifter control tower arm while tightening the trunion bolt to 12-23 ft. lbs. Forward pressure on the shifter lower arm will ensure correct positioning within the D detent as noted in Step 1.
  4.

After adjustment, check for Park engagement. The control lever must move to the right when engaged in Park. Check the transmission control lever in all detent positions with the engine running to ensure correct detent transmission action. Readjust if necessary.
