Mechanical Fuel Pump

1987-88 2.2L engine with manual transmission use a mechanically driven fuel pump, mounted on the right side of the cylinder head, driven by the camshaft.

TESTING



See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor.
  4.  
  5. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the fuel pump and plug the fuel pump return outlet.
  8.

  1. Connect the negative battery cable and start the engine.
  2.  
  3. Check the fuel pressure while the engine is idling. The fuel pressure should be 3.7-4.7 psi.
  4.  
  5. Replace the pump if the pressure is not as specified.
  6.  
  7. Shut off the engine and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the fuel pressure gauge and reconnect the fuel lines.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and plug the inlet, outlet and return hoses at the fuel pump.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel pump mounting bolts and remove the fuel pump, insulator and gaskets.
  6.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install new gaskets and the insulator and fuel pump. Install the mounting bolts and tighten to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Unplug and connect the fuel lines.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.
