REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The Navajo has no distributor. Refer to Distributorless Ignition System, later in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap from the distributor, leaving the spark plug wires attached. If spark plug wire removal is necessary to remove the distributor cap, tag the wires prior to removal so they can be reinstalled in the correct position.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors and vacuum hose(s), if equipped, from the distributor.
  6.
  7. Mark the position of the rotor in relation to the distributor housing and the position of the distributor housing on the cylinder head.
  8.
  9. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt(s) and remove the distributor.
  10.
  11. Check the distributor O-ring for cuts or other damage and replace, if necessary.

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the No. 1 cylinder spark plug and remove the spark plug. Make sure the engine is cool enough to touch, place a finger over the spark plug hole.
  2.
  3. Turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation until compression is felt at the spark plug hole.
  4.
  5. Align the mark on the crankshaft pulley with the TDC mark on the timing belt cover.
  6.
  7. Lubricate the distributor O-ring with clean engine oil.
  8.
  9. Turn the distributor shaft until the rotor points to the No. 1 spark plug tower on the distributor cap and install the distributor. Install the distributor hold-down bolt(s) and align the distributor housing with the mark made on the cylinder head during removal. Snug the bolt(s).
  10.
  11. Connect the electrical connectors and vacuum hose(s), if equipped.
  12.
  13. Install the distributor cap on the distributor. Connect the spark plug wires, if removed.
