  1. Loosen the wheel lugs nuts slightly. Raise and support the front end on jackstands placed under the frame.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels. Support the lower arm with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the upper ball joint and separate the ball joint from the upper arm using a ball joint separator tool.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts and bolts that retain the upper arm shaft to the support bracket. Note the number and location of the shims under the nuts. These must be installed in their exact locations for proper wheel alignment. Check all parts for wear or damage. Replace any suspect parts.

  9. Place the control arm assembly in position. Install the mounting bolts and nuts with the alignment shims in correct positions. Torque the upper arm shaft mounting bolts to: 2WD 60-68 ft. lbs. 4WD 69-85 ft. lbs. Tighten the ball joint nut to 30-37 ft. lbs. and install a new cotter pin.

CONTROL ARM BUSHING REPLACEMENT

The control arm bushings are threaded separately into the upper control arm. If the bushings require service, the front suspension upper control arm must be removed and the bushings unthreaded.
