REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Pickups
  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands, allowing the rear axle to hang freely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Support the weight of the axle with a floor jack.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the shock absorbers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle-to-spring U-bolts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the brake line hose at the junction block. Plug the line.
  12.  
  13. Lower the axle and remove it.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the U-bolt nuts to 100 ft. lbs. on 4-wheel drive models; 58 ft. lbs. on 2-wheel drive models. Torque the shock absorber lower bolts to 58 ft. lbs. Bleed the brakes.

  1. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands. Allow the axle to hang freely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the height sensing adjusting link and mounting and remove the connecting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the axle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the brake hose at the axle and plug the line.
  12.  
  13. Support the weight of the axle with a floor jack.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the shock absorbers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lateral rod.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper links.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower links.
  22.  
  23. Lower the axle slowly and remove the coil springs.
  24.  
  25. Remove the axle.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Position the axle under the truck.
  2.  
  3. Position the coil springs on the axle with the larger end downward.
  4.  
  5. Raise the axle slowly into position.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower links. Hand tighten the bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper links. Hand tighten the bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the lateral rod. Hand tighten the bolts.
  12.  
  13. Connect the shock absorbers. Hand tighten the bolts.
  14.  
  15. Support the weight of the axle with a floor jack.
  16.  
  17. Connect the brake hose at the axle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the parking brake cable at the axle.
  20.  
  21. Install the height sensor connecting bolt. Torque it to 19 ft. lbs on standard models; 104 inch lbs. on models with a towing package.
  22.  
  23. Install the stabilizer bar. Tighten the clamp bolts to 38 ft. lbs. Tighten the end link bolts so that 7mm of thread is exposed above the nut.
  24.  
  25. Lower the truck to the ground. Observe the following torques:

    Shock absorber: 56 ft. lbs.
     
    Upper links: 127 ft. lbs.
     
    Lower links: 127 ft. lbs.
     
    Lateral rod: 127 ft. lbs.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark and disconnect the driveshaft at the axle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheels and brake drums.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the brake line from the clips that retain the line to the housing.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the vent tube from the housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shafts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake backing plate from the housing and support them with wire. Do not disconnect the brake line.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect each rear shock absorber from the mounting bracket stud on the housing.
  18.  
  19. Lower the axle slightly to reduce some of the spring tension. At each rear spring, remove the spring clip (U-bolt) nuts, spring clips and spring seat caps.
  20.  
  21. Remove the housing from under the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Position the axle housing under the rear springs. Install the spring clips (U-bolts), spring seat clamps and nuts. Tighten the spring clamps evenly to 115 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. If a new axle housing is being installed, remove the bolts that attach the brake backing plate and bearing retainer from the old housing flanges. Position the bolts in the new housing flanges to hold the brake backing plates in position. Torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shafts.
  6.  
  7. Connect the vent tube to the housing.
  8.  
  9. Position the brake line to the housing and secure it with the retaining clips.
  10.  
  11. Raise the axle housing and springs enough to allow connecting the rear shock absorbers to the mounting bracket studs on the housing. Torque the nuts to 60 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Connect the driveshaft to the axle. Torque the nuts to 8-15 ft. lbs.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake drums and wheels.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  20.
