Crankshaft Damper

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine fan/clutch assembly and shroud.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt(s).
  6.  
  7. On those engines with a separate damper and pulley, remove the retaining bolts, then separate the crankshaft damper from the pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the pulley-to-crankshaft bolt and washer.
  10.

  1. If necessary, use a puller tool to remove the damper/pulley from the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, remove the crankshaft key.
  4.  

To install:

WARNING
On MPV models equipped with the 3.0L engine, the crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the damper/pulley and can be easily damaged.

  1. Inspect the front cover seal and replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. On 3.0L (B Series Pick-up) and 4.0L engines, perform the following:
    1. Coat the rubbing surface of the damper/pulley with clean engine oil.
    2.  
    3. Apply a small amount of RTV sealant to the damper keyway groove.
    4.  
    5. On the B Series Pick-up with the 3.0L engine, use a crankshaft damper installation tool to press the damper onto the crankshaft. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to 93-121 ft. lbs. (125-165 Nm).

WARNING
Never hammer on the damper to install it.

  1. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt(s) to the following specifications:

    4.0L engine: 30-37 ft. lbs. (40-50 Nm), plus an additional 80-90°
     
    3.0L engine (B Series Pick-up): 39-53 ft. lbs. (53-72 Nm)
     
    3.0L engine (MPV): 116-122 ft. lbs. (157-166 Nm)
     
    2.6L engine: 131-144 ft. lbs. (177-196 Nm)
     
    2.3L and 2.5L engines: 93-121 ft. lbs. (125-165 Nm)

  3. Install the accessory drive belt(s).
  4.  
  5. Install the engine fan/clutch assembly and the shroud.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable. Run the engine and check for oil leaks.
