Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Using tool 112 589 00 40 00 or equivalent spanner wrench, counter hold the crankshaft damper while loosening the center bolt.
  7. Remove the center bolt and pull the damper from the end of the crankshaft.
Do not counter hold the crankshaft at the ring gear with a retaining lock while loosening the center bolt. It is necessary to counter hold at the spokes of the vibration damper because of the high tightening torque of the bolt.

  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the damper bolt to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm), plus an additional 90 degree turn except on M111 engines. On M111 engines, oil the washers, then tighten the bolt to 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm).
