Removal & Installation




NOTE
In all cases, Mercedes-Benz engines and transmissions are removed as a unit.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Transmission fluid
     
    Hood
     
    Battery
     
    Heater hoses and oil cooler lines
     
    Fan shroud and radiator
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Fuel, vacuum and oil hoses
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Accelerator linkage
     
    Ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Gearshift linkage
     
    Exhaust pipes
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen the steering relay arm and move it aside, along with the center steering rod and hydraulic steering damper.

    Hydraulic engine shock absorber
     
    Transmission oil line connectors
     
    Exhaust pipe bracket
     

  6.  
  7. Support the bell housing or place a cable sling under the oil pan to support the engine. On turbocharged models, disconnect the exhaust pipes at the turbocharger. Mark the position of the rear engine support and unbolt the 2 outer bolts. Remove the top bolt at the transmission and pull the support out.

    Speedometer cable
     
    Front driveshaft U-joint and push the driveshaft back and wire it aside
     
    Engine mounts
     

  8.  
  9. Unbolt the power steering fluid reservoir and move it aside. Using a chain hoist and cable, lift the engine and transmission upward and outward.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine and transmission assembly
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Front driveshaft U-joint
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    Exhaust pipes and bracket
     
    Rear engine support
     
    Exhaust pipe bracket
     
    Exhaust pipes at the turbocharger, if equipped. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Transmission oil line connectors
     
    Hydraulic engine shock absorber
     
    Steering relay arm to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Steering damper to the steering linkage
     
    Gearshift linkage and exhaust pipes. Torque the manifold bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Accelerator linkage
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Fuel, vacuum and oil hoses
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Radiator and fan shroud
     
    Heater hoses and oil cooler lines
     
    Battery
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Transmission fluid
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the rear engine lifting eyes are correct. The left lifting eye is marked with a star and code number 04, and the right lifting eye is marked with a star and code number 02.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Air baffle
     
    Engine cooling fan and clutch, then the fan shroud
     

  6.  


NOTE
The fan clutch is equipped with right-hand thread.

  1. Place a guard plate behind the radiator/condenser to protect it from damage during removal and installation.

    Air cleaner housing
     
    Resonance pipe and body
     
    Coolant hoses from the water pump and thermostat housing
     
    Radiator
     
    Coolant expansion tank
     
    Transmission dipstick tube from the cylinder head cover
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose from the rear of the intake manifold
     

  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid from the pump.

    Hoses from the power steering pump, then plug the openings
     
    Vacuum hose at the purge control valve
     

  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.

    Fuel pipe
     
    Heater hose from the rear of the cylinder head
     
    Engine wiring harness
     

  6.  
  7. Lock the automatic belt tensioner by rotating the tensioner counterclockwise until a 5mm drift or pin fits through the tensioner.

    Serpentine belt
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside, leaving the hoses attached
     
    Left inner fender liner
     
    Exhaust system from the manifolds
     
    Cable for the park lock interlock
     

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the torque converter-to-ring gear.

    Torque converter bolts
     
    Left and right Oxygen (O2S) sensors electrical connections
     
    Starter
     
    Engine-to-transmission mounting bolts. Leave the 2 upper bolts attached at this time.
     
    Motor mounts from the front suspension support
     
    Generator wiring harness
     
    Air conditioning compressor electrical connector
     
    Engine ground cable at the power steering pump
     

  10.  
  11. Attach the engine hoist to the lifting eyes, then raise the engine and support the transmission.
  12.  


NOTE
Be sure that the engine does not touch the body at the rear.

  1. Remove the 2 remaining engine-to-transmission mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Slowly pull the engine out to the front and lift it out.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine into the vehicle
     
    Engine to the transmission
     
    Upper 2 mounting bolts
     
    Engine ground cable to the power steering pump
     
    Motor mount bolts and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the engine hoist from the lifting eyes.

    Remaining engine-to-transmission mounting bolts and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Air conditioning compressor electrical connector
     
    Generator wiring harness
     
    Starter
     
    Left and right O2S sensors
     

  4.  
  5. Align the torque converter-to-ring gear matchmarks and tighten the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).

    Starter and tighten bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
     
    Cable for the park lock interlock
     
    Exhaust system to the manifolds and tighten the mounting nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Serpentine belt and remove the locking pin
     
    Engine wiring harness
     
    Coolant hoses to the water pump, cylinder head and thermostat housing
     
    Fuel pipe
     
    Vacuum hose to the purge control valve
     
    Power steering hoses to the pump and fill the reservoir
     
    Brake booster vacuum hose to the intake manifold
     
    Transmission dipstick tube to the cylinder head cover
     
    Coolant expansion tank
     
    Resonance pipe and body, then the air cleaner housing
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator/condenser guard plate.

    Fan shroud and fan
     
    Engine undercover
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with coolant and oil.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Read fault memory, encode the radio and normalize the power windows.
  14.  


NOTE
In all cases, Mercedes-Benz engines and transmissions are removed as a unit.

    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Transmission fluid
     
    Hood
     
    Battery
     
    Heater hoses and oil cooler lines
     
    Fan shroud and radiator
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Fuel, vacuum and oil hoses
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Accelerator linkage
     
    Ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Gearshift linkage
     
    Exhaust pipes
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen the steering relay arm and move it aside, along with the center steering rod and hydraulic steering damper.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hydraulic engine shock absorber
     
    Transmission oil line connectors
     
    Exhaust pipe bracket
     

  8.  
  9. Support the bell housing or place a cable sling under the oil pan to support the engine. On turbocharged models, disconnect the exhaust pipes at the turbocharger. Mark the position of the rear engine support and unbolt the 2 outer bolts. Remove the top bolt at the transmission and pull the support out.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Speedometer cable
     
    Front driveshaft U-joint. Push the driveshaft back and wire it aside
     
    Engine mounts
     

  12.  
  13. Unbolt the power steering fluid reservoir and move it aside. Using a chain hoist and cable, lift the engine and transmission upward and outward.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine and transmission assembly
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Front driveshaft U-joint
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    Exhaust pipes and bracket
     
    Rear engine support
     
    Exhaust pipe bracket
     
    Exhaust pipes at the turbocharger if equipped. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Transmission oil line connectors
     
    Hydraulic engine shock absorber
     

  2.  
  3. Torque the steering relay arm to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Connect the steering damper to the steering linkage.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Gearshift linkage and exhaust pipes. Torque the manifold bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Accelerator linkage
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Fuel, vacuum and oil hoses
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Radiator and fan shroud
     
    Heater hoses and oil cooler lines
     
    Battery
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Transmission fluid
     

  6.  

1.8L And 2.3L (111) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine coolant, engine and transmission oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Fan shroud, clutch and fan assembly
     
    Radiator
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Oil cooler lines
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and air intake assembly
     
    Charge air pipes if equipped with a supercharger
     
    Accessory drive belts
     

  10.  
  11. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.

    Engine wiring harness, ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    Fuel lines
     

  12.  
  13. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir.

    Automatic transmission electrical connections, if equipped
     
    Accelerator and transmission linkage
     
    Power steering pump hoses
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside, leaving the hoses attached
     
    Front halfshafts, if equipped with 4-MATIC
     
    Slave cylinder clutch line, if equipped
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Driveshaft
     

  14.  
  15. Ensure that all electrical and mechanical connections are detached from the Automatic transmission
  16.  
  17. Support the engine and transmission. Disconnect the mounts, and lift the engine and transmission out of the vehicle as one assembly.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Position the engine/transmission assembly and install the mounts. Torque the bolts as follows:

    Transmission mount-to-crossmember bolts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Transmission crossmember-to-body bolts: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Transmission mount-to-transmission nut: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Engine mount-to-subframe mounting bolt: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Slave cylinder clutch line
     
    Front halfshafts
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Accelerator and transmission linkage
     
    Automatic transmission electrical connections
     
    Fuel lines
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    Engine wiring harness, ground straps and electrical connections
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the air conditioning condenser guard and fill the power steering reservoir.

    Accessory drive belts
     
    Charge air pipes
     
    MAF sensor and air intake assembly
     
    Radiator and coolant hoses
     
    Oil cooler lines
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Transmission fluid
     
    Refrigerant
     

  6.  

2.2L And 2.3L (111) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Properly recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.

  5. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine coolant, engine and transmission oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Fan shroud, clutch and fan assembly
     
    Radiator
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Oil cooler lines
     
    MAF sensor and air intake assembly
     
    Charge air pipes if equipped with a supercharger

  11. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine wiring harness, ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    Fuel lines
     

  14.  
  15. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    AutoMatic transmission electrical connections if equipped
     
    Accelerator and transmission linkage
     
    Power steering pump hoses
     
    Air conditioning compressor. Position it aside, leaving the hoses attached
     
    Front halfshafts if equipped with 4-MATIC
     
    Slave cylinder clutch line if equipped
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Driveshaft
     

  18.  
  19. Ensure that all electrical and mechanical connections are detached from the autoMatic transmission
  20.  
  21. Support the engine and transmission. Disconnect the mounts, and lift the engine and transmission out of the vehicle as one assembly.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Position the engine/transmission assembly and install the mounts. Torque the bolts as follows:

    Transmission mount-to-crossmember bolts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Transmission crossmember-to-body bolts: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Transmission mount-to-transmission nut: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Engine mount-to-subframe mounting bolt: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Slave cylinder clutch line
     
    Front halfshafts
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Accelerator and transmission linkage

  5. Remove the air conditioning condenser guard and fill the power steering reservoir.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Accessory drive belts
     
    Charge air pipes
     
    MAF sensor and air intake assembly
     
    Radiator and coolant hoses
     
    Oil cooler lines
     
    Fan clutch, fan and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil

  5. Drain the engine coolant and engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air cleaner housing
     
    Resonance pipe and body
     
    Fan shroud, clutch and fan assembly
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     

  8.  
  9. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant hoses and radiator
     
    Automatic transmission dipstick guide tube
     

  12.  
  13. Drain the power steering fluid and detach the lines from the pump. Plug the lines.

    Automatic transmission fluid lines
     
    Fuel lines
     
    Wiring, vacuum and cable connections
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the hoses attached
     
    Exhaust system and bracket
     
    Driveshaft vibration damper
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Transmission linkage
     
    Front wheels
     
    Front halfshafts if equipped with 4-MATIC
     
    Rear engine crossmember at transmission
     
    Starter assembly
     
    Front engine mounts
     

  14.  
  15. Support the transmission assembly and lift the engine out of the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine assembly
     
    Front engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Starter assembly
     
    Rear engine crossmember at transmission. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).

  13. Raise the engine sufficiently until bolts of air conditioning compressor are accessible

  15. Raise the engine sufficiently until bolts of air conditioning compressor are accessible
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:

    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)

  5. Loosen the steering relay arm and move it aside, along with the center steering rod and hydraulic steering damper.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hydraulic engine shock absorber
     
    Transmission oil line connectors
     
    Exhaust pipe bracket

  9. Support the bell housing or place a cable sling under the oil pan to support the engine. On turbocharged models, disconnect the exhaust pipes at the turbocharger. Mark the position of the rear engine support and unbolt the 2 outer bolts. Remove the top bolt at the transmission and pull the support out.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Speedometer cable
     
    Front driveshaft U-joint. Push the driveshaft back and wire it aside
     
    Engine mounts
     

  12.  
  13. Unbolt the power steering fluid reservoir and move it aside. Using a chain hoist and cable, lift the engine and transmission upward and outward.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine and transmission assembly
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Front driveshaft U-joint
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    Exhaust pipes and bracket
     
    Rear engine support
     
    Exhaust pipe bracket
     
    Exhaust pipes at the turbocharger if equipped. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Transmission oil line connectors
     
    Hydraulic engine shock absorber

  3. Torque the steering relay arm to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Connect the steering damper to the steering linkage.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Gearshift linkage and exhaust pipes. Torque the manifold bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     
    Ground straps and electrical connections
     
    Accelerator linkage
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Fuel, vacuum and oil hoses

  13. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.

    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the hoses attached

  15. Make sure all lines, hoses and electrical connections are detached. Support the transmission assembly and lift the engine out of the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine assembly
     
    Front engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Rear engine crossmember to body. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) except on C,E, CL and S Class. Torque to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) for left bolt and 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) for right bolt on C Class. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) on E, CL and S Class
     
    Rear engine mount to crossmember. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) on E, CL and S Class. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) on other models
     
    Transmission linkage
     
    On 4MATIC models, front halfshafts, shields and front driveshaft. Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), and M12 bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Driveshaft. Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), and M12 bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Driveshaft vibration damper
     
    Lines from the side of the engine and transmission
     
    Clutch slave cylinder, if equipped
     
    Exhaust system and bracket. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Air conditioning compressor. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Wiring, vacuum and cable connections on the engine and transmission
     
    Fuel lines. Torque the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Power steering pump line. Torque to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)

    Coolant pipes and hoses

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant and engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transmission fluid on automatic transmissions.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Fan shroud, clutch and fan assembly
     
    Coolant pipes and hoses
     
    Air cleaner housing
     
    Resonance pipe and body
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Radiator

  11. Drain the power steering fluid and detach the lines from the pump and plug the lines.

    Fuel lines
     
    Wiring, vacuum and cable connections on the engine and transmission
