Removal & Installation



1.8L And 2.3L (111) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Oil filter
     
    Oil pan
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Cylinder head front cover
     
    Water pump
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 20-30 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.

    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Camshaft sprockets. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.

    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Water pump
     
    Cylinder head front cover. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil filter
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  4.  

2.2L, 2.3L (111) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Oil filter
     
    Oil pan
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air conditioning compressor. Position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Cylinder head front cover
     
    Water pump
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 20-30 degrees ATDC for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Camshaft sprockets. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Water pump
     
    Cylinder head front cover. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil filter
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Oil filter
     
    Oil pan
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air conditioning compressor. Position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Cylinder head front cover
     
    Water pump
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 20-30 degrees ATDC for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Camshaft sprockets. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Water pump
     
    Cylinder head front cover. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

    Accessory drive belt
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Oil pan

    Left charge air pipe
     
    Negative battery cable

  6.  

2.6L, 2.8L, 3.2L (112) And 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.5L (113) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     

  4.  
  5. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.

    Accessory drive belts
     
    Cylinder head and engine covers
     
    Coolant hoses at water pump and thermostat
     
    Oil pan assembly
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Air pump, if equipped
     
    Coolant temperature sensor wire
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Coolant temperature sensor wire
     
    Air pump
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Oil pan assembly
     
    Coolant hoses at water pump and thermostat
     
    Cylinder head and engine cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the protective cover from the air conditioning compressor.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, refill the engine with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

2.8L, 3.2L, 3.6L (104) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Engine cover, air cleaner and intake scoop
     
    Fan clutch, belt and pulleys
     
    Wiring and hoses
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the upper timing cover and mark the timing chain and sprockets.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing chain and tensioner
     
    Accessories as needed, referring to the illustration for the specific model
     
    Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Accessories
     
    Timing chain and tensioner
     
    Wiring and hoses
     
    Fan clutch, belt and pulleys
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Engine cover, air cleaner and intake scoop
     
    Negative battery cable

    Timing chain and tensioner

  9. Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

    Fan clutch, belt and pulleys
     
    Wiring and hoses
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the upper timing cover and mark the timing chain and sprockets.

    Timing chain and tensioner
     
    Accessories as needed, referring to the illustration for the specific model
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  5. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.

    Accessory drive belts
     
    Cylinder head and engine covers
     
    Coolant hoses at water pump and thermostat
     
    Oil pan assembly

    Power steering pump
     
    Air pump if equipped
     
    Coolant temperature sensor wire

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

    Power steering pump
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Oil pan assembly
     
    Coolant hoses at water pump and thermostat

  3. Remove the protective cover from the air conditioning compressor.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, refill the engine with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.

    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Oil pan assembly
     
    Coolant hoses at water pump and thermostat
     
    Cylinder head and engine cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the protective cover from the air conditioning compressor.
  4.

4.2L And 5.0L (119) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine cover
     
    Upper timing covers
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 40 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Timing chain tensioner and guides
     
    Camshaft adjusters
     
    Coolant hoses at radiator and thermostat housing
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Vibration damper hub
     
    Front cover oil seal
     
    Water pump
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket and position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Oil pan
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Replace the timing case cover O-rings.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Oil pan
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Water pump. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Front cover oil seal
     
    Vibration damper hub
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Air pump and bracket
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Coolant hoses at radiator and thermostat housing
     
    Camshaft adjusters
     
    Timing chain tensioner and guides
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.

    Alternator and bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Upper timing covers. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Engine cover
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  5. Position crankshaft to 40 degrees BTDC for cylinder No. 1.

  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Timing chain tensioner and guides
     
    Camshaft adjusters
     
    Coolant hoses at radiator and thermostat housing
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Vibration damper hub
     
    Front cover oil seal
     
    Water pump
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Oil pan
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Replace the timing case cover O-rings.
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Oil pan
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Water pump. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Front cover oil seal
     
    Vibration damper hub
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Air pump and bracket
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Coolant hoses at radiator and thermostat housing
     
    Camshaft adjusters
     
    Timing chain tensioner and guides
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Upper timing covers. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Engine cover
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine cover
     
    Upper timing covers
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 40 degrees BTDC for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Timing chain tensioner and guides
     
    Camshaft adjusters
     
    Coolant hoses at radiator and thermostat housing
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Vibration damper hub
     
    Front cover oil seal
     
    Water pump
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Oil pan
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Replace the timing case cover O-rings.
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Oil pan
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Water pump. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Front cover oil seal
     
    Vibration damper hub
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Air pump and bracket
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Coolant hoses at radiator and thermostat housing
     
    Camshaft adjusters
     
    Timing chain tensioner and guides
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Upper timing covers. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Engine cover
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  6.  

6.0L (120) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Water pump
     
    Air pump and bracket, if equipped
     
    Alternator and bracket
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 30 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.

    Power steering pump and bracket and position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Top Dead Center (TDC) sensors
     
    Secondary air pump air cleaner and bracket
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary air injection line, if equipped
     
    Oil pan bottom cover
     
    Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Replace the timing case cover O-rings.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm), the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), and the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Oil pan bottom cover
     
    Secondary air injection line
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary air pump air cleaner and bracket
     
    TDC sensors
     
    Power steering pump and bracket
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Air pump and bracket, if equipped
     
    Water pump
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Air cleaner
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Water pump
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Alternator and bracket
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 30 degrees ATDC for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering pump and bracket. Position it aside with the lines attached
     
    TDC sensors
     
    Secondary air pump air cleaner and bracket
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary air injection line if equipped
     
    Oil pan bottom cover
     
    Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Replace the timing case cover O-rings.
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm), the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), and the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Oil pan bottom cover
     
    Secondary air injection line
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary air pump air cleaner and bracket
     
    TDC sensors
     
    Power steering pump and bracket
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Water pump
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Air cleaner
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Water pump
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Alternator and bracket
     

  4.  
  5. Position crankshaft to 30 degrees ATDC for cylinder No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering pump and bracket. Position it aside with the lines attached
     
    TDC sensors
     
    Secondary air pump air cleaner and bracket
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary air injection line if equipped
     
    Oil pan bottom cover
     
    Remove the timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces. Replace the timing case cover O-rings.
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm), the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), and the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Oil pan bottom cover
     
    Secondary air injection line
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary air pump air cleaner and bracket
     
    TDC sensors
     
    Power steering pump and bracket
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Air pump and bracket if equipped
     
    Water pump
     
    MAF sensor
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
