  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Support the front subframe and remove the mounting bolts. Lower to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with new gasket
     
    Oil pan mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern
     
    Front subframe
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system and engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine cover
     
    Engine cooling fan, fan clutch, and fan shroud
     

  8.  


NOTE
The fan clutch is equipped with right-hand thread.

  1. Attach a guard plate to protect the radiator.

    Intake resonator and pipe
     
    Upper and lower coolant hoses
     
    Engine ground cable from the frame
     
    Motor mounts at the front suspension supports
     

  2.  
  3. Attach an engine hoist and raise the engine. Be sure that the engine does not contact the firewall.

    Lower oil pan
     

  4.  


NOTE
The upper pan bolts are different lengths and diameters. Note their locations for installation.



Upper pan toward the front of the vehicle. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary for clearance.
 

To install:

  1. Clean the sealing surfaces and apply a bead of silicone sealant.
  2.  


NOTE
The pan must be installed within ten minutes after the sealant is applied.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper pan. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm), and the 8mm bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. In the same manner, apply a bead of silicone sealant and install the lower oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Motor mounts and remove the engine hoist
     
    Engine ground cable
     
    Upper and lower coolant hoses
     
    Intake resonator and pipe
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator guard plate.

    Fan shroud, engine cooling fan, and fan clutch
     
    Engine cover
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the cooling system and crankcase to the correct levels.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Read fault memory, encode the radio and normalize the power windows.
  14.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Support the front subframe and remove the mounting bolts. Lower to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.

    Oil pan with new gasket
     
    Oil pan mounting bolts in crisscross pattern
     
    Front subframe

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine oil
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Coolant hose at water pump

NOTE
It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  1. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the oil pan bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Coolant hose at water pump
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

2.8L, 3.2L, 3.6L (104) And 2.2L, 2.3L (111) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Fan shroud
     
    Engine harness cover
     
    Exhaust
     
    Exhaust bracket at transmission
     
    Oil level sensor connection
     
    AutoMatic transmission oil pipes if equipped
     
    Drag link
     
    Front torsion bar
     
    Engine mounts
     
    Rear engine carrier
     

  6.  
  7. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine. Raise the engine to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Rear engine carrier
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Front torsion bar
     
    Drag link
     
    AutoMatic transmission oil pipes
     
    Oil level sensor connection
     
    Exhaust bracket at transmission
     
    Exhaust
     
    Engine harness cover
     
    Fan shroud
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the crankcase with oil, connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine oil
     
    Fan shroud
     
    Power steering lines
     
    Front springs
     
    Bottom engine mount
     
    Steering coupling
     

  4.  
  5. Support the front sub frame and remove mounting bolts. Lower the subframe to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  6.  
  7. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Front sub frame. Torque the bolts to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
     
    Steering coupling. Torque the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Engine mount. Torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Front springs
     
    Power steering lines
     
    Fan shroud
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

3.2L (104) And 1.8L And 2.3L (111) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front torsion bar
     
    Radiator
     
    Fan shroud
     
    Engine harness cover
     
    Exhaust
     
    Exhaust bracket at transmission
     
    Oil level sensor connection
     
    Automatic transmission oil pipes, if equipped
     
    Drag link
     
    Engine mounts
     
    Rear engine carrier
     

  6.  
  7. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine. Raise the engine to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
  8.  


NOTE
It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  1. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Rear engine carrier
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Front torsion bar
     
    Drag link
     
    Automatic transmission oil pipes
     
    Oil level sensor connection
     
    Exhaust bracket at transmission
     
    Exhaust
     
    Engine harness cover
     
    Radiator
     
    Fan shroud
     

  2.

3.2L (112) And 4.3L (113) Engines

    Coolant
     
    Engine under cover

    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Coolant hose at water pump

  5. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the oil pan bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Coolant hose at water pump
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the oil pan bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Coolant hose at water pump
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

4.2L & 5.0L (119) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine oil
     
    Coolant
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Drive belt and tensioner with bracket
     
    Dipstick guide tube at air pump bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Engine mounts
     
    Front springs and shock absorbers
     
    Steering coupling
     

  4.  
  5. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Support the front sub frame and remove mounting bolts. Lower to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
  8.  


NOTE
It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  1. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Sub frame. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Steering coupling
     
    Front springs and shock absorbers
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Dipstick guide tube at oil pump
     
    Alternator and bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Dipstick guide tube at air pump bracket
     
    Drive belt and tensioner with bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.

    Coolant

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Engine mounts
     
    Front springs and shock absorbers
     
    Steering coupling
     

  8.  
  9. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine.
  10.  
  11. Support the front sub frame and remove mounting bolts. Lower to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  12.  
  13. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Sub frame. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Steering coupling
     
    Front springs and shock absorbers
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Dipstick guide tube at oil pump
     
    Alternator and bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Dipstick guide tube at air pump bracket
     
    Drive belt and tensioner with bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

    Engine oil
     
    Coolant

  5. Remove the air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the lines attached.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Alternator and bracket
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Engine mounts
     
    Front springs and shock absorbers
     
    Steering coupling
     

  8.  
  9. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine.
  10.  
  11. Support the front sub frame and remove mounting bolts. Lower to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  12.  
  13. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Sub frame. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Steering coupling
     
    Front springs and shock absorbers
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Dipstick guide tube at oil pump
     
    Alternator and bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Air conditioning compressor and bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Dipstick guide tube at air pump bracket
     
    Drive belt and tensioner with bracket. Torque the bracket mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

6.0L (120) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine oil
     
    Engine assembly
     
    Alternator
     
    Oil pressure sensor wire connection
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Vibration damper
     
    Secondary air injection line
     
    Oil pan end cover
     

  4.  


NOTE
It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  1. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Oil pan end cover
     
    Secondary air injection line
     
    Vibration damper
     
    Dipstick guide tube
     
    Alternator
     
    Engine assembly
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable

  7. Support the front subframe and remove the mounting bolts. Lower to access the oil pan mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.

  6.  
  7. Using a suitable engine support tool, support the weight of the engine. Raise the engine to access the oil pan mounting bolts. Support and lower the front subframe.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the M6 bolts to 88 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Torque the M8 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Torque the M10 bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Tighten the subframe bolts (use new bolts) to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
     
    Rear engine carrier
     
    Engine mounts. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Front torsion bar
     
    Drag link. Tighten the bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Automatic transmission oil pipes
     
    Oil level sensor connection
     
    Exhaust bracket at transmission
     
    Exhaust

  3. Fill the crankcase with oil, connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine oil
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Coolant hose at water pump
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pan. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the oil pan bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Coolant hose at water pump
     
    Coolant hose at thermostat
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Engine upper cover
     
    Coolant
     
    Engine oil
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

M272 Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to tap on the oil pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge it from the engine block.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Engine oil
     
    Bolts from the oil pan
     



    Oil pan
     

  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces using solvent, do not scrape the surface. Apply sealant A 003 989 98 20 or equivalent to the oil pan. Tighten the pan mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
