Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  


NOTE
All engines use a 1-piece radial seal.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission assembly
     
    Flywheel or flexplate
     
    Rear main seal using a suitable prying tool
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Coat the inner lip of the seal with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Seal into the retainer
     
    Flywheel or flexplate
     
    Transmission assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  


NOTE
All engines use a 1 piece radial seal.

To install:

  1. Coat the inner lip of the seal with engine oil. Using a seal driver, install the seal into the retainer.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel or flexplate
     
    Transmission assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel.
  4.  
  5. Place a hook type seal removal tool behind the sealing lip of the oil seal. Pry out the oil seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Place the seal onto the crankshaft flange. Do not lubricate the seal, install it dry.
  2.  
  3. Use tool 111 589 08 43 00 or an equivalent seal installation tool to push the seal evenly into the sealing flange.
  4.  
  5. The seal should be pushed to a depth so that it is 1mm below the sealing flange.
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel.
