Timing Chain Cover & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Serpentine belt
     
    Fan shroud and radiator
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Serpentine belt tensioner
     
    Vacuum pump
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Self-leveling suspension hydraulic pump
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  
  5. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Cylinder head cover and charge air pipe
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     
    TDC sensor, marking its position
     

  8.  
  9. Support the engine and remove the engine mounts. Raise the engine to gain access.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing cover bolts and carefully remove the cover from the engine. Be careful not to damage the oil pan and cylinder head gaskets.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Engine mounts
     
    TDC sensor
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Cylinder head cover and charge air pipe
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the air conditioning condenser guard
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator
     
    Self-leveling suspension hydraulic pump
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Vacuum pump
     
    Serpentine belt tensioner
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Radiator and fan shroud
     
    Serpentine belt
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  6.  

Diesel Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Serpentine belt
     
    Fan shroud and radiator
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Serpentine belt tensioner
     
    Vacuum pump
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Self-leveling suspension hydraulic pump
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  
  5. Cover the air conditioning condenser using a piece of sheet metal, plywood or plastic.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Cylinder head cover and charge air pipe
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     
    TDC sensor, marking its position

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Engine mounts
     
    TDC sensor
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Cylinder head cover and charge air pipe

  3. Remove the air conditioning condenser guard
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator
     
    Self-leveling suspension hydraulic pump
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Vacuum pump
     
    Serpentine belt tensioner
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Fan clutch and fan
     
    Radiator and fan shroud
     
    Serpentine belt
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  6.  

M111 And M271 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Oil filter
     
    Oil pan
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air conditioning compressor and position it aside with the lines attached
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Cylinder head front cover
     
    Water pump
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     

  4.  
  5. On M111 engines, position crankshaft to 20-30 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) for cylinder No. 1. Lock the camshafts with locking pins and matchmark the timing chain to the sprockets.
  6.  
  7. On M271 engines, position the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) and check that the marks on the camshaft sprockets align with the marks on the bearing caps.

    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Timing cover. Make sure to clean all gasket material from the sealing surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Timing cover with new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) on M111. On M27, tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Vibration damper and pulley
     
    Intake camshaft with adjuster
     
    Camshaft sprockets. Torque the mounting bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft locking pins and verify timing mark alignment.

    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Water pump
     
    Cylinder head front cover. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Accessory drive belt tensioner
     
    Alternator and bracket
     
    Air conditioning compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Fan clutch and shroud
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil filter
     
    Left charge air pipe
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     

  4.  

M112 And M113 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system and engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The fan clutch is equipped with right-hand thread.



    Engine cover
     
    Engine cooling fan, fan clutch, and fan shroud
     

  8.  
  9. Place a guard plate behind the radiator/condenser to protect it from damage during removal and installation.
    NOTE
    The timing chain cover bolts are different lengths and diameters. Note their locations for installation.



    Accessory drive belt and tensioner
     
    Cylinder head covers
     
    Coolant hoses
     
    A/C compressor and wire aside
     
    Oil pan
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing chain tensioner
     
    Oil filter housing and heat exchanger
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Timing chain cover
     

  10.  
  11. Pull the crankshaft seal from the cover. Insert a new one using a suitable seal driver.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

  3. Clean the sealing surfaces and apply a bead of silicone sealant to the timing chain cover.
    NOTE
    The cover must be installed within ten minutes after the sealant is applied.



    Timing cover. Apply sealant to the bolts indicated in the illustration. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)

  4.  
  5. Fill the cooling system and the crankcase to the correct levels.

    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Read fault memory, encode the radio and normalize the power windows.
  8.
