Removal & Installation



M112 And M113 Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air filter housing and intake tube.
  6.  
  7. Detach the components from the cylinder head covers; this includes the vacuum hoses, crankcase ventilation hose, transmission dipstick tube and ignition coils.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the covers, then remove them from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm) on M112 engines and 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) on M113 engines. Be sure to use a new gasket

M271 Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air filter housing and intake tube.
  6.  
  7. Detach the components from the cylinder head cover; this includes the vacuum hoses, wiring harness and ignition coils.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the cover, then remove it from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Be sure to use a new gasket

M272 Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air filter housing and intake tube.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil filter housing and power steering expansion reservoir.
  14.  
  15. Detach the electrical connections, then remove the front cover from the cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Relieve the fuel system pressure, then disconnect the fuel line from the engine.
  18.  
  19. Detach the components from the cylinder head cover; this includes the vacuum hoses, wiring harness, engine control module and ignition coils.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil separator on the cylinder head cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolts securing the cover in the reverse of the tightening sequence, then remove it from the engine.
  24.  
  25. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts (follow the tightening sequence) to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm), then tighten them an additional 90 degrees following the same sequence. Tighten the front cover bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Use sealant A 003 989 98 20 or equivalent on the cylinder head cover and front cover.

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air filter housing and intake tube.
  6.  
  7. Detach the electrical connections, then remove the front cover from the cylinder head.
  8.  
  9. Detach the components from the cylinder head cover; this includes the vacuum hoses, wiring harness, engine control module and ignition coils.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts securing the cover in the reverse of the tightening sequence, then remove it from the engine.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts (follow the tightening sequence) to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm), then tighten them an additional 90 degrees following the same sequence. Tighten the front cover bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Use sealant A 003 989 98 20 or equivalent on the cylinder head cover and front cover.
