Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Using appropriate removal tool, remove the bushings from the control arm.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the bushings using appropriate installation tool.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm assembly
  4.  

Front Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Using appropriate removal tool, remove the bushings from the control arm.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the bushings using appropriate installation tool.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm assembly
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Using appropriate removal tool, remove the bushings from the control arm.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the bushings using appropriate installation tool.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm assembly
  4.  

Rear Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Using a press, remove the rubber mount from the spring link.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the rubber mounts using a press.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm
     
    Rear wheel

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Disc brake rotor securing bolt and backing plate bolt
     
    Ball joint nut
     
    Ball joint-to-steering knuckle nut
     
    Control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm assembly. Torque the control arm nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) and the knuckle nut to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     
    Backing plate bolt. Torque to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor bolt. Torque the bolt to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Disc brake rotor securing bolt and backing plate bolt
     
    Ball joint nut
     
    Ball joint-to-steering knuckle nut
     
    Control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm assembly. Torque the control arm nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) and the knuckle nut to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     
    Backing plate bolt. Torque to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Brake rotor bolt. Torque the bolt to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Disc brake rotor securing bolt and backing plate bolt
     
    Ball joint nut
     
    Ball joint-to-steering knuckle nut
     
    Control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm assembly. Torque the control arm nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) and the knuckle nut to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     
    Backing plate bolt. Torque to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor bolt. Torque the bolt to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Front wheel

4-Matic
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Axle shaft 12-point nut
     
    Ball joint nut and press the ball joint out of the steering knuckle
     
    Axle shaft from the flange
     

  4.  
  5. Support the knuckle assembly by placing a block of wood between the coil spring and the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Position the axle shaft out of the way using a piece of wire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint. Torque a new self-locking nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle with a new self-locking nut. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    12-point axle nut. Torque to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Axle shaft 12-point nut
     
    Ball joint nut and press the ball joint out of the steering knuckle
     
    Axle shaft from the flange
     

  4.  
  5. Support the knuckle assembly by placing a block of wood between the coil spring and the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Position the axle shaft out of the way using a piece of wire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint. Torque a new self-locking nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle with a new self-locking nut. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    12-point axle nut. Torque to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

Except 4-Matic
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Coil spring
     
    Stabilizer bar and bracket
     
    Lower control arm-to-frame nuts and bolts
     
    Ball joint pinch bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm. Temporarily tighten the control arm-to-frame nuts.
     
    Ball joint pinch bolt and nut. Torque the nut to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Coil spring
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle to the floor. Torque the control arm-to-frame nuts to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Coil spring
     
    Stabilizer bar and bracket
     
    Lower control arm-to-frame nuts and bolts
     
    Ball joint pinch bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm. Temporarily tighten the control arm-to-frame nuts
     
    Ball joint pinch bolt and nut. Torque the nut to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Coil spring
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle to the floor. Torque the control arm-to-frame nuts to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Coil spring
     
    Stabilizer bar and bracket
     
    Lower control arm-to-frame nuts and bolts
     
    Ball joint pinch bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm. Temporarily tighten the control arm-to-frame nuts.
     
    Ball joint pinch bolt and nut. Torque the nut to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Coil spring
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle to the floor. Torque the control arm-to-frame nuts to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
