Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel

Torsion bar link rod at strut

    Strut at wheel hub

Rebound stop on strut top mount

    Strut

  4.

To install:

  1. If installing a new strut, transfer all components from the old strut to the new one.
  2.
  3. Clean the strut mounting surface.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly.

Rebound stop. Torque the bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

Strut to wheel hub. Torque the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).

Torsion bar link. Torque the bolt to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

    Front wheels

  6.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.
  5. Support the lower control arm.
  6.
  7. Using a spring compressor, compress the spring to relieve the pressure on the lower control arm.
  8.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

Upper mounting nut while holding the piston rod with a hex wrench

    ABS sensor wire

    Lower strut mounting bolts

    Strut assembly

  10.

WARNING
Do not allow the knuckle assembly to hang by the brake hose, ABS wire or brake pad sensor wire.

  1. Remove the upper nut and remove the strut from the vehicle.
  2.

To install:

  1. If installing a new strut, transfer all components from the old strut to the new one.
  2.
  3. Clean the strut mounting surface of the knuckle.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:

Strut assembly. Torque the lower bolts only until the heads make contact.

Upper mounting bolt with washer and new self-locking nut. Torque until the surface of the knuckle makes contact with the strut.

  6.
  7. Torque the lower mounting bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm), then tighten the upper bolt to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
  8.
  9. Release the tension from the spring compressor. Be sure the upper and lower ends of the spring are properly seated.
  10.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.
  5. Support the lower control arm.
  6.
  7. Using a spring compressor, compress the spring to relieve the pressure on the lower control arm.
    NOTE
Convertible models have a vibration damper mounted on top of the left strut mount. Installation of the nut is possible only with the use of socket 124 589 00 09 00 and torque wrench 001 589 67 21 00.

  8.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
Do not allow the knuckle assembly to hang by the brake hose, ABS wire or brake pad sensor wire.

    ABS sensor wire

    Lower strut mounting bolts

    Strut assembly

  10.
  11. Remove the upper nut and remove the strut from the vehicle.
  12.

To install:

  1. If installing a new strut, transfer all components from the old strut to the new one.
  2.
  3. Clean the strut mounting surface of the knuckle.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:

Strut assembly. Torque the lower bolts only until the heads make contact

Upper mounting bolt with washer and new self-locking nut. Torque until the surface of the knuckle makes contact with the strut

  6.
  7. Torque the 2 lower mounting bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm), then tighten the upper bolt to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the upper mount. Torque a new hex nut to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). On convertible models, be sure the 0.008 inch (0.2mm) thick steel washer is installed below the self-locking nut.
  10.
  11. Release the tension from the spring compressor. Be sure the upper and lower ends of the spring are properly seated.
